inclusions or negatives

Joe found the following quartz specimen with a layer of hematite or ilmenite covering an edge.  He noticed some linear marks in the center of these crystals with the loupe.  So I took the specimen home to get a closer look using my camera.  What do you think?  Looks like possibly weathered rutile.  At the top right corner of the first photo it definitely looks like rutile.  There is also what looks like a limonite pseudomorph after pyrite in the bottom of the second photo.

Great pics, Scott, thanks.
I've looked at this thing so much my eyes are criss-crossed!
In several places the lines appear to be the edge of the
Hematite,(or Ilmenite), crystals, and in other places it looks
like a separate something else.
Weathered rutile is what it has always looked like to me, just
wish we have seen any other rutile specimens from this spot.

This pic won't help with identification but you can see the
"blue flame" I was talking about. Like I said, I've looked at
this thing for way too long. Smiley

I believe the "blue flame" is the result of slight iridescence on the hematite or possibly the quartz that seems to be in that spot in my picture.  I don't believe there's any other mineral present there causing the blue your seeing.  I'm glad to see signs of rutile though.  We'll have to keep our eyes open for better specimens at that location.

that is very pretty. i am loving the blue halo.
could those haystack lines be negatives of the rutile then replaced by something else? either an included quartz or....looks like calcite.

do you guys have any calcite present over there? dogtooth? i can't remember. but calcite always seem to be opportunistic and seep into any crevice it can. or maybe i just have calcite on the brain.  Tongue

Hey Rebecca,
This locale is in Montgomery County and we do not see a lot,
or as yet, any calcite there.
With Scotts' help I can see that the "blue" I am seeing is from
my lighting and reflections off the Hematite.
We will have to read up on what Rutile can possibly be
replaced by, if anything, and, as always, we'll need more
specimens! Wink
