Durgy Mine

Has anybody collected recently at the Durgy Mine?  I called up Person county and one of the guys in Ag ext.  said that the new owners do not welcome visitors.  I would be glad for any info.  I have been to the blue wing mine and will be going back but I kind of wanted to check out another mine.  Thanks, Dan  Smiley

Rebecca,
Both have at the least malachite in or on quartz.  Azurite has been seen at the blue wing mine.  Dan

No telling, Dan.
There are actually several old "Durgy" mines. I don't know if
any of them have recently changed hands, I haven't been up
there in a little over a year.
One spot is a tailing pile out in the middle of a large field
with no shade. The other area has several pits that you used
to be able to dig in, but they were being used as trash
pits the last time I was there. Would be very unpleasant
during the heat of summer listening to the old empty plastic
milk jugs popping. Sad
As with most places, you just don't know what to expect
without going up, knocking on a few doors, and checking it
out. A cold 12-pack in a cooler wouldn't be a bad idea to
help gain access. Wink
Either way, it would be much more comfortable digging in
some of the cooler months of the year. When I was up
there last you had to ask permission to get to any of the
old copper prospects and you could tell that it was going
to be getting harder and harder to access any of the sites.

Good idea, but you won't know until you try.
Joe

Joe,
Thanks for the information.  I may try the blue wing out this coming week and maybe hold off on the durgy mine that is shown on Mindat until Fall.   Cool Dan

I have purchased both the Seaboard in Virginia and Blue Wing in NC. Will be pumping the Blue Wing down in late Oct this year 2012 and will allow (with will not sue's signed) access to the pits.

Tom Kleeburg owned the Durgy at last notice but had sold/leased a package of several properties to Revolution Resources - they are supposed to be doing diamond drilling on their locations but the recent info is sparse

Thanks for the info. BWCCC.  It will be a great opportunity for rockhounds who otherwise may not have known about this locality.  Thanks for letting us know in advance.

Bornite, another mineral found at the Blue Wing is something I really enjoy because of its iridescent colors.

Yes Sir, BWCCC, Thank You for the update.
I have always thought you were very smart to purchase that
property when you did. I look forward to getting up there
in November and meeting you and seeing how your efforts
are coming along.

Thanks, Joe

Bornite is beautiful, or the pic you linked is.
Is the stuff from this mine like that? Also, is the azurite in crystal form?
I have some from Graves, but it is weathered or decayed. It is still in crystal form, though. I also have some in a bright white matrix, with micro pyrite crystals. I have seen this cabbed and polished and it is beautiful, but had to be stabilized with some compound before being worked.
I think it is interesting to see what minerals show up where in the SE. Aren't these minerals associated with copper?

Yes, it is interesting where minerals show up in the SE.
And, yes, those minerals are commonly associated with copper
and other metallic minerals.
I think the bornite is pretty, too.
I've slabbed some but haven't gotten around to cabbing much of it yet.
Here's a sample pic of the material from the Durgy.
Not much azurite but high in bornite and malachite.
Microscopic crystals sometimes form in vugs.
Pretty cab material.

Thanks for the photo Joe. Green is always nice. Always. I bet that would make some pretty cabs. That is a really really pretty blue green too.
Inland is having a cabbing contest until the Oct. 15th, I believe. You should enter. I love my cab/arrowhead from the Crabtree you gave me.

When Laurie mentioned several months ago that Diopside had been found on specimens
from the Durgy mines I pulled out my old buckets of rocks from that area.
I kept putting off checking them. But now that diopside is the mineral of the month and
Laurie has brought it up again,  I finally got inspired to take a look.
Much to my disappointment I could find no diopside, Sad,
so as consolation I thought a few pictures of the botryoidal malachite might be of interest. Smiley
