First of three views of a pocket that looks to contain a different mineral than quartz with almost an octahedron type formation

I can't be sure about the crystals in question but am wondering if they are double terminated quartz crystals on matrix?  Better pictures may aid in the identification if the mineral is indeed something other than quartz.   Congrats on the recent finds though oakcity, it looks like you maybe in an area with good potential.

Very nice finds indeed. Thanks for the pics!
Your crystals in question do appear to have a different form
in the angle of your first pic, but in the other close-ups
they look more like the other "odd-shaped" quartz crystals
that did not get the coating of iron oxide on them.
I'd like to take a closer look but am guessing it's the color that makes them look so different.
Maybe put afew pieces in iron out and see what you have.
Very interesting formation there.
Good Luck and Happy Hunting!

Thanks Joe & RaleighRockhound. I will try to get some better pics of the areas that I am curious about. Also, Joe I am testing some other pieces in Iron Out now before dropping some of the better stuff. I also have a small boulder about the size of a basketball with pockets all over it that I am waiting to dunk once I have it cleaned up I will post more!

It is hard to be sure from the pictures, but it does look like it's all quartz.  Most has the citrine looking yellow tint, the questionable crystals appear to be quartz also, but I may detect a slight amethystine tint to them.  I think you may have found a fine place to dig, decent looking potential.  I'd say go back and dig!

Looks great OakCityHound!  You've definitely found yourself a nice spot for crystals.  Keep us updated on any future finds.  Wake County is a pretty swell place.   Wink

Just thought I'd add some pics of garnets in mica from the

You know, Oak City, the first times I looked at that one crystal in your last two pics
I figured the "line" down the middle of it was from "staining"
but now I'm wondering, the way it's lined up right in the middle of the fissure
and the odd 2-part growth, if it might be a faden?
The thought just occured to me. Have you cleaned that piece yet?
