Great pics, Scott. Love the smokey!
That rutile looks different than what we're used to seeing. No reticulation? A slight anatase look to it?
Is this type of rutile formation  something different/new to you?

Yes, no I have not seen this type of formation in other Wake County rutile I've found.  It is unusual for it not to be reticulated as you have pointed out. Who know if this isn't some sort of transitional artifact between the polymorphs of rutile -- brookite or anatase.

Took my daughter to Mine Creek yesterday. She found this tiny crystal in the first 5 minutes.

Well, we have decided it is schorl, afterall. Now we're looking for Elbaite. Wink

Here are a couple more pieces from the tennis courts.
The first little crystal has a nice patch of rutile on it and the second
little crystal has mica running thru it. Smiley

A little quartz from mine creek. Please excuse all the photos. I am trying to figure out how to get all the details. The fifth photo is where I was experimenting with my microscope.

Well done, Neal. It takes some practice, lights, camera, not so much action. Wink
I'm going to get some of that graph paper.

Now that it's Summer, here are pics of some of my Spring finds.
Seems I only find weird stuff anymore. You are now entering Wake County, "Home of Weird Rocks".
Maybe that's just what everyone else is leaving for me to find. Huh
Like these iron oxide coated quartz concretions in the first pic. They were all mixed in with the mica in the bottom of a fissure.
