These next pieces came from a fissure Scott and I worked on into the wee hours of the morning. Wink
A lot of the fissures around here have been what we call "baked", but the pocket clay in this fissure was like kiln dried.
It was as hard as fired ceramics. For the first hour or so we took turns trying our "magic" methods to extract the crystals
without breaking them. Just when we thought we had it free, we'd hear this spine-staightening snap.
A terrible sick sound to hear after all that time and work pickin' away at it.
But like I say, after an hour or so, it got to be kindof comical and we had to realize that the quartz was going to break before the fired pocket clay every time.
A lot of this quartz was clear facet grade smoky, so we made good facet and cab material as we tried to concentrate on working around the larger crystals.
We had the larger crystal in the first pics completely exposed except for about an inch of the tip.
I was sure it was free. Roll Eyes As I lifted the base to slide it out I heard this sickly little "snap", and I knew the tip was gone. Cry
This quartz has had a tough life. Often, the bigger it gets, the uglier it is. I included a couple close-ups of the inclusions.
Treasures you'd have to dig yourself to love. Smiley

A couple of House Creek finds from last weekend. Each is about 1.5 inches long. Both pieces had the brown material on the tips (wouldn't come off or lighten with Super Iron Out). Once my microscope is back up and running I'll post magnified pics.  Grin
Found some really nice agate too!! Thanks JoeM for the tip.  Wink ...Looking for ideas on what to do with it.

Great finds NealLord! Many House Creek crystals also have green chlorite inclusions. I've also found garnets there too.

9 x 6 x 4 cm

This one was extracted in situ from a very mica rich vein in a subdivision off of Yates Mill Pond Rd. in Raleigh, NC.

Beautiful finds. I'm new to Wake Forest. Are you familiar with the Holding Farms area? Any places that might be good?

Hey P, Welcome to Wake County! I can't remember all the developments by name
but try the east side of the reservoir on Hwy 98 after all this rain.

Here's another find that has some sort of green inclusion, I was thinking chlorite... Maybe. Any thoughts?

Really cool quarts crystal with a smoky phantom that goes all the way around the crystal, to both terminations. Never seen anything of the sort.
