Here is a healed quartz floater from Silver Lake.  Its shape reminds me of a baseball bat.  Although in two pieces they have been completely healed as shown in the photo.

Scott,
Where is silver lake?  Loved the pic of the siderite.   I did a mapquest for the lake and came away with about nine locations that all seem wrong. Gorgeous specimens! Dan

Silver lake is now covered over with Houses. Last time I rode by that location no dirt was to be seen. The siderites are great  from that location. I have one tessin habit quartz that grew threw the middle of a siderite crystal. I didn't find it til later on after a few rains washed the dirt off in my screen. Maybe Scott has a few that you can buy from him?

Copy the following coordinates into google maps and you will see the location.

35.74791,-78.728908

The crystals came from the subdivision on the west side of the lake.  When I pull it up on google maps, the satellite view is dated and shows the subdivision at the beginning stages of construction -- at which time we were also finding the crystals.  Currently it is now packed with homes, pavement, and people.

The green circle is where I found most of the crystals.  It was very hot in that area, and I could find a crystal or two everytime I went there.

This quartz rock, found in Raleigh at "The Oaks" subdivision, had kyanite.  This kyanite was the only kyanite recovered from this location.  I have examined this rock many times, but only just today did I notice the small pocket of crystals on one end of it.  I think the kyanite had always deflected my attention from edges of the rock.

The entire rock is:
7.5 x 5 x 3 inches
19 x 13 x 8 cm

It is very likely that the pseudomorphs you are referring to in this thread are "limonite" after dolomite, rather than limonite after siderite.  It has recently been determined that all the Crabtree Quarry, Triangle Quarry, etc. siderite is actually dolomite.  Given that, it is most likely that the pseudos from the same general area would be after dolomite as well.  In fact, to my knowledge there is no confirmed specimen of siderite from Wake County period!  Also, the "biotite" that has helped make the Crabtree Quarry famous, is not biotite, but rather muscovite!  Man do I have a lot of labels to change!  (These recent analysis were brought to my attention by Kenny Gay.  Thanks Kenny!  He also has found that there is NO olenite at the Ray Mine!)

Thanks Laurie, I'll be trying to change any references of siderite to ferroan dolomite.  I too believe that since Crabtree is in the same general area that my pseudos are limonite after dolomite.  Especially since no siderite has ever been confirmed from Wake County.
