Here is one of my favorites when it comes to form. Its obvious twinning is aesthetically exhibited.  It is the only one in my collection with this form. Here are four different angles of the same specimen. In the last picture I used careful placement and reflection to show the crystal domains or where one crystal begins and the other ends, or vice versa.

Yep, those are hematite included ones are still beautiful. The last pic posted is cool! I like how the one on the side is tucked in nicely with a little cap on top to make sure it stays in place.  Wink

Scott always like finding a crystal with the diamond face.  Do you think there are more areas to dig where the hematite inclusions were found?  Still enjoying my crystals from this site.  Thanks again.... Smiley Cheesy

I believe there are more under the ground.  Getting to them is the hard thing.  We'll need a track hoe.

The next three are of one hematite included cluster.

These crystal grew separately yet contacted during growth.  They fit snugly together like puzzle pieces.  The second picture is of the bottom crystal.  I wanted to show the area of contact where the crystal grew against the other. The last is of the double terminated crystal found above the other.  There was both hematite and some, yet to be determined, green mineral, possibly chlorite in this one.

Reference this video to watch as that double terminated crystal was discovered.

I remember that day. You had just said how you wanted to
find a nice double terminated one, and that's the very next one
you found. Ask, and you shall receive. Smiley
Nice of you to let me dig it out of the ground so you could
record it, and it's nice to see it again.

I'm glad you moved these two sections up from the bottom,
and it's funny, I just set a few of the headless green
crystals out for pics a couple of days ago.

Ilmenite and quartz.  I have not figured out what the brown mineral is/was.  A combination of weathering and or replacement has removed any obvious clues to its former crystal shape.

The area of this small vug is 4 x 2 cm.

Just a thought on the specular quartz. Could it possibly be illmenite and not hematite?  Have you had it analyzed at NC State? It would be interesting to know exactly what the secondary mineral is.

I have been wondering that since the beginning, Shaun,
and we have kicked the Specularite vs Ilmenite issue back
and forth. But, no, we have not had an analyses done on it yet.
With all the Ilmenite found all over Coopers Ridge it only makes
sense to me that that's what it could be.
Here is a past thread,

I'd love to get it analyzed.  But if/when we get it done I was thinking that they will find both hematite and ilmenite.  There is hematite causing the reddish brown colored phantoms (found in most of the crystals), and either ilmenite or hematite crystals causing the sparkly phantoms.  There is also the even rarer green chlorite phantoms in the Chatham Co. material.  Since I can find no reference of "sparkly" ilmenite inclusions then what we have is either very rare or very ordinary (all hematite).  So as much as I would love for it to be ilmenite there's good probability that it isn't.

Highly included quartz druzy.  It is interesting in that it seems that the growth of the quartz is affected by the ilmenite/hematite inclusion.

The area of the photograph is 1.5 x 1 cm
