Good picture, Julie.
Those last few pics of Scott's kind of put a halt to the anatase pics.
Pretty hard to top that! Shocked
But I blew the dust off a box lately and found a couple pretty pieces inside worth taking a few pics of.
2 pics each, front and back, of 2 different specimens.

Here are 2 of my most recent finds in an alpine fissure that I’ve been working in the Uwharries. I’ve pulled around 40 other large crystals from this same fissure and countless small crystals and clusters. And there are definitely plenty more to be extracted. The further I dig, the nicer they seem to be getting.

Here is a picture of the one on the left in situ. As you can see there are man more crystals surrounding it. I feel like I could pull out larger clusters if I could just pressure wash them out. The clay is very hard and the sickening crunching sound of fracturing crystals is unfortunately common at this locale.

Wow very nice, usually when I get to the hard crunchy clay I like to use long pry bars with handles to remove the excess clay around the crystals. Good luck. Thanks for the photos.

Those are very nice.  Thanks for sharing!

I've never been to Uwharrie looking for rocks, but want to give it a go this spring.  We spent a day there several years ago and tried gold panning, but I'd say that gold panning apparently isn't my "thing."  If anyone wants to point me in the right direction (quartz crystals?), I'd really appreciate it.   Wink

I had never been out to Shingle Trap mountain before a couple of days ago. It was a location I had seen mentioned many times before so I decided to press my luck and I am happy I did. I didn't find huge crystals but I did find some interesting stuff. I have taken a few horrible photos of one piece and a couple using a cheap digital microscope.

The first two photos were quickly taken with my phone, the piece that is terminated on all sides and has some Anatase in/on it.

The next two photos were using the cheap digital microscope. The first photo has the anatase that can be seen while the second photo I don't know exactly what I am looking at.

I want to clean the specimen more but I am not sure if I will lose the anatase on the clay-rich side. Any thoughts?

It's hard to tell.  There's always a chance of the anatase falling off after soaking in acid.  You either do it and it's works out great or some of them fall off.  Those two nice one's in my opinion seem to be attached pretty well to the quartz underneath.

Glad to hear you got this spot off your bucket list! Smiley
And a nice souvenir to boot! I agree, the anatase in the quartz and in the white coating "usually" stays put. Of course if it's in clay it will likely wash away.

Here's one of my favorite included siderite specimens from Montgomery County.

If you are ever careful enough to sneak up on it without it noticing, making sure to approach on the right side of the Siderite, you might be lucky enough to see it dancing. But if it notices you, the curves will straighten, the sides will right, a modest mineral, a siderite.
