A awesome floater cluster (healed all around) collected in Catawba County, NC.  There are what I believe is goethite pseudomorph after siderite peppered over the surface of the cluster.

10 x 5 cm

Owned and photographed by John Frazier.

John explained,

"This is free standing rutile with calcite from Tate Blvd, Hickory.
The crystals are on a slab of quartz vein."

Amethyst scepters from Tate Blvd. in Hickory, NC.  Owned and photographed by John Frazier.

John said, "These scepters have red rutile and hematite inclusions.  Plus the scepters are in a sort of vein on the side of the gray quartz."

Scott nice pic. I drive by this location every time I am in Hickory. But have never has the opportunity to go on one of the Hickory Club field trips. There are several interesting minerals found at this location. I know you and Joe would enjoy being on site. Smiley

Very pretty with rutile on amethyst. Don't think I had seen that combo yet. Thanks for showing. Nice color in the amy too!

Nice specimen and photo, Scott.

Here's another stilbite from the same locality.  The specimen measures: 3.7 x 1.9 x 0.43 in (9.3 x 4.9 x 1.1 cm).

Very nice Dennis.  The habit looks different on that piece.  I like the variety.

Since moving to this area, I've seen some incredible quartz specimens for sale or displayed in collections at the annual gem and mineral show in Hickory from the Tate Boulevard area.  I've been fortunate to get a few specimens from old time collections by purchase or trade.

The quartz from the Tate Blvd. area is unique and readily identifiable; many with rehealed surfaces and mud inclusions.  Here are a two, of several, that I now own:

Photo 1: Amethyst - partial scepter with minor mud inclusions.  The photo is two views of the same specimen.

Photos 2a & 2b: Parallel growth Amethyst - note the unusual surface of the crystals.
