Green Days on the Greenways

No big deal here. Just thought I'd share. Smiley

Spent this last weekend checking a couple sections of the
various "Greenway" projects going on around Raleigh.
For some reason you usually don't find much in these types
of disturbances, but they're in the right spot and they look so
goood!, you just got to check them out.

This first place is no exception. The locality looks ideal for
Indian artifacts AND it just happens to be in a known old
amethyst producing area known as "Wilders Grove".
It rained hard last Thursday night and Friday, so by
Saturday it had over an inch of rain on it, but I still didn't
see the first thing. I really had my hopes up about this spot
but didn't see a flake or a crystal. Angry
This section of the Greenway runs along the Neuse River
approaching Hwy 64 from the west. A large rotting granite
bluff ovelooking the river with a large swamp downriver
to the east. This Greenway is part of the "Mountains to
the Coast Trail".
Sorry, I didn't take better pics.
This first one is looking east over the swamp area.

Like I said, looks like a pretty ideal area to find an arrowhead.
Not the first flake but it was a real pretty walk.
The rest of these pics were shot from on top of the bluff
looking east, or downriver. The swampy area is out of sight
from here.
It looks like they are going to be incorporating the natural
rock and contours into the path.
There is one pic looking up river, or westish.

Hope you enjoy the peek at it.
Joe

And then, for some reason I woke up early Sunday....... Roll Eyes
I didn't mind. It was another beautiful sunny cool clear
morning with the hint of the coming comfortable warmth
in the air.
If I didn't check anyplace else today I was going to check
out House Creek at Lake Boone Trail. I thought this greenway
was just a part of the City of Raleigh system, but they sure
are going all out on it so it may tie into the Mountains to
Coast Trail, too.
House Creek has long been a known collecting spot for
agate and quartz crystals. The site is listed in NC States
"Mineral Localities in NC" as also a unique location for
"Mossy Agate". Much of the quartz crystals from House
Creek are very nicely included with chlorite. I did find a
piece of rolled crystal in the creek heavily included with
chlorite that I think would be a perfect example of what
people have been incorrectly calling "Mossy Agate". I'll
try and clean it up up for a pic.

With all the work they've been doing here, again, you would
think they would've exposed or cut thru something good.
I'm standing at the base of this feeder drainage coming
down thru the rock to House Creek below.
Then a shot looking downcreek toward Lake Boone Trail and
the ridge they have cut thru where beautiful crystals have
been found before. Then a shot up creek toward Horton Rd.

If you look real close you can get a glimpse of Raleigh's
King of Creek Crawlin' Agate Pickin' Pickers. A true professional.
This is a rare sighting, but he has been here to House Creek
more than anyone over the last forty years.

Very pretty. More importantly, VERY interesting history. You should definitely go back to check it out more sometime - I would (hint, hint Joe).
Looked like a great day, even with no finds. Thanks for sharing.
