This is a fantastic example of the well known Diamond Hill "skeletal quartz" from a recent find at this location.  The black coating is manganese and iron oxides -- painted by the earth herself.  This specimen, however, seems to be a hybrid mix of "artichoke" and "sprouting" quartz growth forms.

8 x 6 x 6 cm

I believe angled sunlight give a better representation of this specimen I posted earlier in this thread.

Not the best example of amethyst on matrix, but I felt it needed recording.

Great pics, Scott, All of them. Thanks.
Nice assortment from DH. Love the color in that last amethyst
matrix piece.
I've heard the "cactus" quartz formation also called "spirit"
quartz. Are they different names for the same formation?
Hmmmm......? Wink

Yes, exactly, different names for the same form.  In fact we can call this one skeletal spirit cactus quartz.   Cheesy

To demonstrate the Iron/Magnesium coating found on many of the crystals from Diamond Hill I left the patina on this specimen.
