My guess is monazite for now.

Check the crystal with a Geiger counter.  Monazite is a rare earth mineral, and slightly radioactive.

Well it was something CB said recently about working a lot of quartz with rutile lately that made me stumble across this old thread.
I didn't read all the old text on page 1, (almost afraid to), but it looked like a good place to stick some new pictures of the golden mystery crystal, even though I put them in the Cemetery section already.

Seems Quartz and Rutile is a combination of my two favorite minerals.
Every crystal is a new wonder!
I wanted to sink my teeth into this badly damaged piece of a beautiful smoky quartz crystal.  Wink

I've seen gold in quartz that resembles this specimen,  rutile is a possibility.  The rutile we find here in the Baltimore area, is jet black ora redish black. The jet black is from Loch Raven Reservoir,  along the shore past the first ridge , North of the dam after the first bridge. The other is on the east side of Red Run Blvd, when you are parallel with the salt dome on Rt. 795.
There is supposed to be a deposit of rutilated quartz in the vicinity of the towns of Bird In Hand and Nickel.
