Fossils

I did not see a topic area for fossils, so I put it here in the Specimen Photos section.

I just began to take photos of my fossil collection (300+) so I can create a database as I did for my rock & mineral collection.

I wanted to share some of the fossils I have just photographed, and will divide them into topic categories Invertebrates, Fish, Reptiles, and Mammals.

The first photos I am posting are ammonites and a trilobite I have.  I will give a general ID and locality, and an approximate size (I have not measured them yet for the database).

Invertebrates:

1.  Ammonite; personally collected; Fort Worth Prairie, Benbrook, Tarrant Co., TX; ~4" diameter.  Notice the nice suture lines on the shell.

2.  Ammonite; given to me by my former boss at the zoo; Fort Worth Prairie, Benbrook, Tarrant Co., TX; ~0.25".

3.  Trilobite; purchased; Millard Co., UT; ~1.25" (trilobite), 4-5" matrix.

The next group I will post will be the Fish fossils.

And Last but not least,  Mammal Fossils:

1.  Horse tooth; personally collected; Edisto Island Beach State Park, Charleston Co., SC; ~3.0".

2.  Horse tooth; personally collected; Snake Island, mouth of the Savannah River, SC/GA;  ~3.5".

3.  Mammoth milk tooth; personally collected; Edisto Island Beach State Park, Charleston Co., SC; ~3.0".  Note the enamel on the tooth.

4.  Unidentified bone; personally collected; Terlingua Ranch, Brewster Co., TX; ~3.25".  Notice the cells in the piece.  It may be fossil palm wood, but it looks more like bone to me.  I found other bone pieces in the same spot.

That's all that I will post for now.  I have three more shelves to photograph, plus the boxed away fossils I do not have displayed.   Once I get the database completed I will look for a buyer for the entire fossil collection and the tall showcase they are currently in.

Good stuff, Dennis! Thanks for posting. Smiley
Glad to see you are finally getting around to your fossil

Will have to look that "Milk tooth" up.

Joe,

Glad you liked the few specimens I posted.  It's going to be a daunting task to put together this database.  Finding the names of the different plants and animals will be a chore, but fun.  I love to do research on subjects I really like.

I went through a stage of 15-20 years where I mostly collected fossils, with the occasional mineral trip thrown in.  I collected a lot of fossils in Texas, South Carolina, and Georgia, and Kentucky when the opportunity arose. There were some great fossil areas within 2 hours of Atlanta, and I hit most of them over the years.  My favorites were the trilobite locales near Coosa and the old coal fields near Durham, GA.  There were lots of specimens to be had back then.  The coal fields have gotten picked over and are harder to access now.

I still have many more photos to take.  I hope I can get it done before another hip gets worn out!

Great pictures Dennis.  Those megs are awesome.  I didn't realize you had such a large collection of fossils.  I can't imagine how much rock and fossils you must possess.  I will have to come visit your collection some time soon.
