Thanks dirtslanger.  Those electron micro photos of the iridescent hematite are a great reference.  It's really neat to see it up so close like that.  Nice panorama of the main pit!

Had a great time. Met a lot of people. I'm in Gastonia and only one other was there from my club. Hope to see some fine pics. Peter

Nice pic. Where you at the Graves dig? I see people on boards but don't know who they are if I meet them. lol. did we happen to meet at the dig? I only went to the top with Trip once on Thursday heading back to home base. Went up and talked to Drew for a minute (whom I just met that weekend). I was mostly around the pit for the 4 days. Also need to learn how to take a nice picture.

Scott,
You always have such great photos. Never have seen a hematite with that coppery color out of Graves before.  Is that color common at Graves?

Very good observation Dan.  This was one of only a couple specimens that had this color and luster, which is why I wanted to post it.  I have only a small collection of this stuff so I can't yet say that it's rare unless we get maybe a couple more opinions from other Graves Mnt. collectors.

Yes I was at Graves when you were there.  I was up there digging to the left of Drew the whole time (about 15 ft to the left).  So you may have seen me.   Grin

The copper color is found most commonly in the pockets that produce the botryoidal hematite crystals.  The color in these pockets usually exceeds the color of the hematite coated crystal pockets.  The rarest colors in my experience are the cardinal red ones or the bright magenta color.

Better late than never....
Sorry I've been a little busy.  Finally got around to photographing some of the stuff I found on my first dig.  I was very lucky to have Scott nearby for reference and to stumble on a small pocket while digging out some elbow room to my left.  Lots of fun!

Most of the photos are of Ir. Hematite on quartz.  I included one shot of a nice Kyanite blade, a chip off of one of the many large loose rocks there full of lazulite blue kyanite and pyrite and a small lazulite crystal that was either knocked off or fell off with weathering.  You can find them at the bases of the lazulite stones if you dig around a little.

Nice photo, Scott.  I love playing with nighttime illumination.  This shot makes me want to get back into "real" (non phone camera) photograpy.  You even captured the Big Dipper!

Thanks!  I encourage you to definitely get back into photography -- it can be very rewarding.  Camera phone picture technology has gotten so advanced that there are some known photographers that exclusively use them, so I wouldn't bash them too much.  But long exposure (nighttime shots) and other features are still probably best used with a real camera.

Looking for a good place to stick these pictures I took recently of a nice slab of the Lazulite, Kyanite, and Pyrite in Quartz Matrix from Graves Mtn.
And came across this great old thread. Smiley
