Fluorescent calcite from NAEM

Well as always I am posting a little teaser before posting pictures but let's start the story...

This past weekend I went rockhounding near Burnsville with Laurie AMD.on the way back stopped by his shop to add to my collection. I fell in love with hyalite and got a flat. I didn't have a light source at home so I bought an el cheapo black light from  Walmart so I could admire the pieces. Out of curiosity I flashed the light over my display shelf in hopes something would shine that glorious eerie glow and seve pieces did, one that caught my eye was a small calcite crystal that has grown directly next to a quartz crystal. It glows a nice, cool red. The other notable fluorescent minerals are ones I have purchased so nothing worth mentioning I suppose.
When the time comes and I figure out a reliablle method to photograph these specimens I will post pictures but until then just ponder the thought.

Joe,
You are missing out on some very nice material by not collecting the glowing ones.  RR you may want to go to American Rockhound and see if there is a topic on how to take better pics.  You did better than I have managed.  Dan

Nice photos, RR.  I, too, have found it hard to photograph fluorescent minerals.

I think a lot depends on the type of UV light is used.  Mine is a small portable LW/SW light, so the coverage is small and it has to be real close to the specimen.  A larger unit that can me mounted above the specimen would make it easier to take pics.

I agree with Dan, Joe.  You are missing out by not collecting some of the fluorescents.

RR, Dan, and others (particularly Triangle residents): I have some extra NC fluorescents (mostly autunite - mildly radioactive) that I would trade if you're interested.  I do have a large chunk of Franklinite, Willemite & Calcite from NJ that has incredible flourecence that I would part with, too.

What would it take to get some autunite?

Dennis,
I have all the ones that you mentioned.  Do you have any others that you would be willing to part with?  I love to trade.  In fact, I have a whole back porch that I need to partly clean out.  If you have some time some day, why don't you come over and we can trade.  If you are interested, I will pm you my phone number and directions.  Dan

I have two yard rocks with fluorescent calcite from NAEM I am going to break into manageable pieces, there is also a 1" pocketed area of pyrite that I will be making some thumbnail pieces out of. Besides NAEM and hyalite from Chalk I have no other NC fluorescent specimens.

That pocket of pyrite sounds nice, RR.

Ya'kno.....I heard that fluorescent stuff gradually rubs off
on you just looking at it. I'm afraid I might start to glow so
much I won't be able to get to sleep at night. Roll Eyes
