Here are a few pieces from an adventure about a month ago, i ruined over half of my haul by leaving it in iron out for to long.  turned the matrix a nasty brown color and stained the kyanite blades a similar color.

That's some pretty stuff, too. Nice!
Hard way to learn about the latent effects of iron out.
But that's the way we do. Wink

All from the ray mine, yancey county

Large 50 lb. piece with 11 inch mica, several beryl, several perfectly terminated apatite, and a drill hole through the back.  One of my favorites

Beryl and apatite

Drill hole

Clorophane (fluorite) normal light

Clorophane on medium heat over stove, no light. Thermoluminescence

Very small doubly terminated golden beryl, anyone have one smaller?

More ray mine beryl

Can you see the beryl, after a rain.

Same beryl as above.

Another beryl terminated

Another beryl doubly terminated.

Two beryl end to end

This pile of small beryl came from one large boulder. Probably 75-100 beryl. Most of them broke into pieces. Some doubly terminated and good matrix pieces came out.

Large beryl about 10 inches by 10 inches from the grandfather mountain exhibit

The chlorophane is from the ray mine, pretty rare up there.

I had never heard of it before; thanks for sharing the pictures and the information.  It's always fun to learn something cool about minerals.

Yes, thanks for the pics, EZ. Great pieces!
I'm with Raleigh Rockhound on the chlorophane.
Tis new to me. Will have to read up on it some.
Very nice quartz cluster from Montgomery Co.

Very nice haul. That chlorophane is neat. There are soooo many minerals up at the Ray. I love it there! I really need to get back. I keep saying it, but don't do it. I am going to make it a priority.
Thanks for sharing!

The chlorophane got real hot just after the floods in 2004. There was a good amount of it found then, it didn't interest me much so I never targeted it, but there was one particular area in the creek that it was found. The other interesting one is the elbaite that can be found there, although it was found up on the hill, high up next to one of the pits. I was able to dig some of that.

Dave, I can see why the creek started spitting out the fluorite after the floods, and I know where your talking about.  The creek cut into a large area of the bank where some very interesting pegmatite was discarded many years ago.  The area was full of amazonite which is the indication for most of all the rare and unusual minerals up there.  If you go deep enough there are huge boulders with amazonite, elbaite, vugs with tiny crystals of feldspar, fluorite cubes which I only heard about, some pretty neat stuff.  But it is all off limits now because its next to the creek.  If you want to find the elbaite or chlorophane you have to find a spot with amazonite, break it up and look all over.  Hard to find now

Raleigh, I'll try to post a pic sometime soon, I don't have any really nice elbaite but I've seen some very clear pieces.
