MAGMA Club Glendon Burgin combo Oct. 13 - 14, 2012

We had to be out of the Glendon pit by 3:00 pm so we packed up and headed for Norwood where the Burgin quartz prospect is.  This dig was also schedule by the MAGMA club. Mr. Burgin charged us five dollars to camp for the evening.  We paid our five plus an additional ten for the next day of digging, signed the waivers, and were ready to set up camp.

Joe inspects the area looking for a promising spot to dig the next day. (below)

Oh yeah, the goats.  They are harmless but are not afraid to ask for food.  So if you don't want them asking for food, don't feed them.   Wink

If you hadn't caught on yet, a pry bar is an invaluable tool to have at this location.  Chisels, hammers, and sledges, are also useful as they will help create the cracks large enough to allow the pry bar space to do its work.

Unfortunately, we have to deal with quartz that is sandwiched in between, locked in, and surrounded by more quartz.  It can be a time consuming and exhausting process trying to get it out.  It makes me exhausted just thinking about it.

Break time.  All that exhausting work means a lot of breaks (no pun intended).  It's on these breaks that I'm able to take pictures.

It's been a while since we witnessed the birth of this colt (right).  The colt seems to smile as its mother delivers a gentle kiss on the nose. Aren't mothers just great?

I managed also to find vug or two of my own. The classic kaolin and red clay pocket material was present. This was an average size pocket filled with the usual rehealed shards or quartz tabbies. It's always exciting and fun to excavate a pocket and if you are not a rockhound then I believe you will become a rockhound after having the opportunity to do this once yourself.

Scott,
Beautiful pics of the fluorite. I never realized that the edges had that shape.  You have a real skill with the camera.

I am now going to risk heresy and ask what the big deal about the burgin mine is.   I have yet to see any pics of crystals that justify all the attention it is getting.

I must be missing something.  A bunch of folks that I respect love going there.  When you post the cleaned up crystals how about showing one or two that show me why people are so excited about colleting there.  I have not had a chance to get down there myself so my question is one of ignorance. Thanks, and as always love to see what you do with the camera.
