Here is moonstone on garniteferous schist from what is said to be the earliest site of mica mining in Virginia.  Collected with my son Sean in about 2004 or so.  I don't recall whether this came from the creek, where most moonstone is found at this locality, or from the compacted/graded dumps.  You can see the one face that is oxidized more than the rest, so I suspect that is what was flush with the surface.  We pried only a few pieces from the southernmost dumps, which are highly compacted at the edge of the farm field around what looks like an old shaft sealed with an iron hatch.

It's my lighting. Recently we explored further and found the old mica mine pits along the northern end of the creek. Extensive and overgrown dumps throughout the woods.

Didn't know we had calcite in Hanover. Above or below the fall line?
