Bowers to Burgin Weekend
Apr 1st, 2013 at 10:13pm
Print Post
Just a few pics from this past Easter weekend.
Everyone had Friday off, and the weather was forecast to be
better on Friday than it would be on Sunday, so we started
Friday at Bowers Farm, right up the road from the Burgin Mine,
to dig for some of the well preserved limonite after pyrite.
This was my first time at Bowers and I do intend to go back.
The weather was indeed perfect and the digging is easy.

Anyway, I plan to go back until I find something! Wink
I didn't find much all weekend, not from lack of trying mind you,
but the weather was so comfortable and it felt so good to be
digging again, I still had a great time.
Not as good a time as Scott had. I'd say Scott was the "winner"
this weekend, with Mark a close second, and they just brought
me along for comic relief. Cool

So after trying a couple different spots for the limonite and
not finding many of the "pretty pieces", Scott shows me
what he's been finding. Which is exactly what I was looking for.
So we all decided to get in line with Scott's digs and we did
much better.

As Friday turned toward evening it was time to head for
Bojangles and then to meet Mr. Burgin.
We camped at the Burgin Mine Friday night and felt right at home with the familiar quartz outcrop and all the wild animals. Wink

Here's what the outcrop is looking like these days.

Saturday morning and we're ready to go!
If I could put a caption to this first pic it would have to be,
"Two asses and a Jack."
But ofcourse I can't say that. Roll Eyes
(I just like the second pic.)

First pic is a shot of the whole crew on a beautiful Saturday in Stanley County, NC.

We had a few "newbies" join us for the day. They all did great
and we are glad they made the trip out to see what this
Burgin Mine is all about.
Second pic is Dusty Travels talking things over with his Mom,
( I want to say Donna), who braved the whole day with us,
and Rob to the far-right of the pic.
Third pic is Dusty watching Mark dig for the "Big One"!

As mentioned, or implied, earlier, if you want to see pics of
any decent finds from this weekend, either limonite or quartz crystals,
then we will have to wait for Scott to post some.

In the meantime, and in conclusion, here's a pic of a typical vug
with shattered blades of healed quartz, and the hole I dug
where it was found at.

OK, one quick pic of the Limonite.
I think the sharp-edged and clean sided clusters make nice
looking specimens and are worth collecting.
My sister said it probably helps to appreciate them if you're a rockhound. Shocked

Still experimenting with the best way to clean these.
Don't think Iron Out is the best answer. Laborious multiple soakings
and brushings might be best.
And want to try different coatings for finish.

Water and a stiff brush are the only good ways to clean these.  Iron out will turn them pale and ugly, it will ruin them, same with oxalic or any acids.  Matrix pieces with attached white decomposed feldspar can be soaked in bleach for awhile to whiten up the feldspar and increase the contrast, but this is only for a few rare pieces.  Leaving them outside will also ruin them over time, they can crack and fall apart from freezing and thawing, particularly those that still have a pyrite core, which is perhaps 50% of them.  Some people have used various oils or acryllic coatings to improve the luster, but most of the time it just makes them look "fakey".

Thanks Laurie, that's pretty much what it looks like.
I still want to try a coat of mineral oil on one. Wink

Instead of regular mineral oil, I use "Wood Oil" from Wisconsin Hardwoods / Snow River Products.  I works great.  It is a mineral oil, but in has a lower viscosity and it almost disappears after wiping dry, but leaves a protective coat that looks natural but the colors of the piece stand out more.  I get this at a local hardware.  It is not sold in Home depot or Lowe's.  Does anyone else use this product?

I decided to make a video instead of posting pictures and words this time.  The Burgin material simply cannot be enjoyed to its potential unless held and manipulated to allow the light to reflect off of the thousands of faces in the Burgin healed quartz.  Putting them in a video and on a turn table was the next best thing I could think of to convey the awesome and unique characteristics of Burgin healed quartz.

My apologies, and thanks Peter for letting me know.  I had changed it to "Public" but apparently failed to hit the save button so the change was never made.  Since the video was viewable to me I never knew others couldn't see it.   Tongue

same here. when i do a website, i'll look at it from another computer like my laptop or work computer to make sure it is right. if a page is reading a pic from my computer, i still see it and others can't. but i don't do it the old fashion way so i don't have that problem much anymore. lol.
