Mid-May Traveling frm GA to VA

Here's one of those "any suggestions while I travel through ...?" kind of posts.

Over May 10-19, I plan to catch a flight down to Orlando area, where my wife Rebecca is visiting son Paul, then we will drive our car back to our home near Richmond, VA.  First we will camp a few days at Jekyl Island, GA, but have no set plans after that (so far).  Any rockhound suggestions or opportunities as we travel through/near your areas?   Since I'm flying down there and we didn't think ahead, we will have no tools except what we can scrounge, borrow or buy.  (I figure if the opportunities are right, we may break down and buy one more shovel, pick, hand sledge etc. to add to our collection.)  Considering our tools situation, creek picking might be good.

Would be especially cool to tag along to one of your "home turf" sites.  (Even if I wasn't a nice guy, I live too far away to sneak back and clean out your mother lode.) Take us to one of your spots, and I will gladly owe you a trip to the Mica Mine Farm in central Virginia should you be up that way later. (There's always moonstone in the creek, and I have yet to locate and explore all of the old mica mine locations on the property.)

Sounds reasonable to me Tim. Smiley
If you are going to be making your return trip up along the
coast, I would definitely have to recommend you try to get
by Aurora and the fossil and rock museum. It's a little out of
the way, but the exhibits are good and they bring tailings
up from the phosphate quarry and dump them next to the
museum for folks to go thru. That alone ought to keep you
busy for a couple hours. I think you would enjoy it.

There isn't a whole lot in the way of rock hounding between
Aurora and Wake County. If you come by way of the Capital City I would be happy to show you to some of our creeks
and other now infamous sites under condos, Wink,
provided we can arrange the time.
Feel free to PM me if you want to discuss details.

Have a good day,
Joe

If you come through central NC you can come to my rockshop and I'll take you out to a sweet spot and I have plenty of tools.

Joe & Laurie, thank you! I will talk it over with Rebecca and get back to you soon. We will have a third party with us, Chip, a 3 month old Boykin spaniel. He has yet to go rockhounding with us, but he digs right beside us when weed the gardens! I'm driving down to Chester today (didn't like the idea of driving I-95 in last night's weather) to give #5 son Sean more learner's permit time in the driver's seat. So, yes, once again I will have to resist turning off I-95 at Hanover County and the mica mine farm on my way there.  Cheers

Bad news. Rebecca had hoped that rest and relaxation in Florida might delay back problems, but she has steadily worsened. We have been doing things accessible by scooter, with minimal walking and standing. She will be seeing the surgeon when we return to Virginia. This will be her third surgery.  It will be a rough couple of months, then in all likelihood she will once again outpace me!  We are staying at Jekyll Island (hotel vs planned camping) on our way back, but then will likely drive straight through. Hope to see our Rockhound friends on another opportunity. My offer to take one or two 'hounds to the Mica Mine Farm still stands, calendar permitting, should you venture north.

Thanks for the update, Tim.
Very sorry to hear about Rebecca's back pains. I know how
hard it is to do anything when your back isn't right.
Hope all goes well. Smiley

I guess you and one of your camping buddies,(sons), will just have
to plan a trip down this way just to hunt rocks sometime. Wink
The Mica Mine sounds very interesting. We may just surprise
you sometime. Smiley

In the meantime, take care, and thanks for keeping us posted.

Joe
