Well, not much of an indepth report here but a good time was
had by all at the annual Spring dig at Glendon yesterday.
About 100 of the 120 folks signed up showed up.
With all the precipitation we have been having lately I was
expecting to almost have to swim to the fluorite bearing quartz vein
at the back of the quarry but it wasn't bad at all.
The quarry operators have been making some improvements
to the drainage pond in the quarry and it seems to be working very well.
My last couple of trips to Glendon have not gone as planned,
so I was looking forward to getting down to some serious digging.
Here's the group that was going after the fluorite this trip.

DSMsrule, aka Shaun, started out by finally getting the
quartz boulder he was working on last fall out of the ground.
It was well worth his time!
This vug has a cascading waterfall of barite with a couple of
yellow fluorites attached to it surrounded by lovely quartz crystals.

Mark and I worked together on the vein. About 2 o'clock
we were running out of time and hadn't gotten into the main
section of vein we were working on. Mark didn't just get a
second wind, he turned into an animal with a 10lb sledge! Wink
That big section of vein finally succumbed to his maniacal battering and fluorite poured from a few fractured pockets.

Here's a pic of Mark with his hand around a nice vug of baby blue fluorites.

There were actually two pockets exposed in this fracture.
The blue one on the right and a smaller one with yellow and
purple on the left.
Here are some pics of it in the ground and I hope to add some
pics of the stuff cleaned up soon.

Yesterday was a blast.  I stayed up top and looked for pyrite.  Found lots and lots of pretty small cubes in matrix.  I also broke open a black rock that had silvery pyrite in it and what looks to be a cube of bluish fluorite.  Not in quartz.  I am going to bring it to the dig this coming weekend and see what you fluorite experts think.

This yellow fluorite found Saturday is about 5/8" long and 3/8" wide.
And it has what looks like a purple phantom. Smiley

The damage to the front corner of the crystal is mostly
where something else was, and had to be grown around.

Just a couple more pics of the purple center.
It's curious to me how the purple seems to be more just a coating
on the bottom of this "window". I can't see the "body" of
another cube behind it.
Will have to look closer.

It's too bad we don't have time to study and collect all the
different quartz crystalline formations, because this quartz
rock we were busting into was full of pretty crazy-crystalline vugs.
This second piece has some nice quartz crystals on it but
they are not shown in these pictures.
Besides for the few quarter-inch babyblue cubes on this piece
I love the way the vug is literally lined with small fluorites.
Especially the clear ones.

So, if it takes 10 of my pics to equal 1 of Scotts, Wink
here you go. Smiley

Very cool pieces Joe, thanks for posting the pictures. Never been to Glendon and couldn't give a reason why that's the case.

Great report Joe.  I was hoping I could see pictures soon since I wasn't able to make it.  Looks like you guys had fun and found some very nice specimens.  Did you continue the tradition of slicing your hand open like every other trip we've had to Glendon?  Well, I'm glad you guys did well.  Thanks for the quick report.

Scott

Want to add a couple pics of this piece because of the
magenta, fucia, strawberry color.

Nice, Joe.  We were after the Pyrite, but we picked up some quartz to take home from the spoil pile to crack later.  Here is one piece I found.  Not perfect but I like the purple frame on the yellow fluorite.
