hi.. i just moved to bristol va and am a retired paleontologist. Am looking for people to hunt for artifacts and rocks, fossils, ect. but dont know anyone here, or where to hunt.

Hello tjarman,
Welcome to this group. I'm newer to the rock thing in general and I'm sure there are a few here that can help you. I'm west of Charlotte near NC/SC line. Where did you move from? I've been collecting rocks and minerals for just about a year now and digging about 6 months. How about you?

Here is a good index of VA fossil Sites I found with a quick search on google:  http://www.fossilsites.com/STATES/VA.HTM

I also found a West VA, fossil club online, but did not see information about how to join on their club
on their home page.  But there is contact information there:  http://www.westvirginiafossilclub.com/


I know your looking for Virginia fossil collecting places, but hopefully the NC coast wouldn't be too far of a drive for you.

The 20th anniversary of the Aurora Fossil Festival is coming very soon to Aurora, NC  -- May 24 thru May 26.  You may be interested in going to this.  Here is the website of the Aurora Fossil Museum who is hosting it:  http://www.aurorafossilmuseum.com/

If you are in the tri-cities area, Douglas Lake, near Sevierville,  Tn is not that far for you to drive. It is a winter time activity only, when the lake is low - October through March. I have found crinoids, coral, and a very tiny trilobite looking bug   Wink in another spot. I am not so much into the fossils there as the sweet little quartz crystals, hematite, and galena.
I would be happy to show you around sometime.
There is also the Gray Fossil site very near you. That might feel like work, but they might allow volunteer-based involvement. It is a great little museum and site to see and I highly recommend it. Obviously, there are big fossils to be found up in that area too.
