Greetings from Raleigh NC!

Hello all!
Just did some reading on this forum and checked out some of the adventures.  I live in Raleigh, NC around Centennial campus at NC state.  My friends and I have been finding some decent faceted quartz but would like to go to some new spots.  Can anyone recommend places around Raleigh?  Thanks!

There's not a whole lot going on in Raleigh, when something is found it is usually a construction site that comes and goes; sometimes within a week.  If you are finding faces you're potentially in an area that will produce crystals.  Scott the webmaster of this site occasionally will post trip announcements to various locations around NC if you and your friends are willing to hunt outside of Raleigh.

Welcome, Collin, Glad you found the Board! Smiley
I'm glad someone has been poking around over at CC.
We have found crystals nearby but I have missed checking CC all together.
First thing the State does is put up fences, signage, and cameras.
Too much to deal with! Walk spoiled!
Are you finding any complete crystals or just faces? Smoky? Any Rutile?

RR answered your question about other local places to collect pretty well.
They are pretty much where ever you find them, and many don't last long.
There are a number of creeks to crawl in the area.
Infact, I hope to get to a new/old creek spot a new member has invited us to check out.
You don't usually find insitu veins creek crawling, but you can find some neat stuff and see alot of the local geology.
Or maybe we'll meet up on a trip to the Burgin Mine sometime!

Happy New Year! Cheesy
Joe

Hey guys,
Thanks for the replies!  Joe to answer your questions, one of my friends did find a complete crystal which I don't have a picture of, it was small but was complete.  I have attached 2 pictures of what I have found recently.  There are some smokies out there but nothing really nice and no rutile.  The area I am digging in looks to be an old creek deposit of sand and lots of stones but few facets.  A few other spots I have gone to are construction sites in the Raleigh/Cary area which I found nothing at all.  Hope to go on a trip sometime.  Grin

Great prospecting there Collin.  What you have found is always a sign of crystallizing veins nearby.  If or once you can locate the vein(s) in-situ you will find high quality crystals that have not been eroded by the creek.  Look for signs of mica as is a notorious sign of crystals in Wake County.

Thanks Scott!  Perhaps I need to dig deeper in the location I found these at.  Thanks for the tip on the Mica, I have another location that I was digging at that had some Mica pockets on the side wall of a creek bed (also around NC State).  Maybe I will go back there today and do some more digging.  I really want to find some of the quality that has been found in Wake County, I could not believe some of the pictures on here!  Will keep you posted!  Thanks!
