I came across this old file cleaning up and saw that Flint Ridge Flint
hadn't been entered yet. It is such a unique and famous rock.
Because of it's association as a main stone tool and projectile point making material to the Native Americans,
the many different colored patterns, and just all the variety,
it has always been a favorite of mine. I would like to get up to east-central Ohio sometime and view the lay of the land.

That being said,
Flint Ridge Flint is a perfect example of a stone being called something it isn't. Smiley
Not in the furthest stretch of geological formation could FRF be flint. It is a chert.
The use of the word flint comes strictly with it's connection and use by Native Americans.
(And I've always thought it makes for a pretty classic jasper. Roll Eyes)

Here are a few pics.
The first is of the milky white "bull" rock of the chert layer.
It is very good knapping material and "can" turn all sorts of colors when heated. Pic 2.

Thanks for the pics.  I had written off ever being interested in the Flint material since I pictured a uniform gray stone.  Our son is up in Toledo now and I may be paying him a visit.  I may include a side trip for the "flint".  Do you have a particular quarry that you like the best.

Flint Ridge is somewhere i'm going to have to figure out how to visit someday. Long story short, I'm convinced I got the rockhounding bug through genetics, I think back to my great great grandparents the hobby has been traced. My great grandparents were rockhounds in Ohio and dug at Flint Ridge, here is what my grandfather just sent me on the subject.

"At Flint Ridge, it was my mother’s folks, Dorian and Elizabeth Smith who were active there. That was in the sixties and into the early seventies by which time they were saying that the good stuff was gone but I think that may be an overstatement. They were members of some local mineral society involved in helping to preserve a portion of the site. They lived in New Philadelphia in Tuscarawas County about 70 or 80 miles away. They went collecting there numerous times and had some really nice examples and some gorgeous stuff they had cabbed. That’s about the extent of my knowledge on the subject."

Pretty funny how even in the 60s and 70s it was "played out"

see i'm already confusing myself, the story does pertain to my great great grandparents, it may have been even further back that the hobby is traced.

It is funny how the old timers always say a place is "played-out".
Makes you wonder what it was like way back then?

I've wanted to go up there for a long time.
The big knap-in is around Labor Day. That would be great to visit,
but I bet the quarries are pretty crowded at that time.

First, happy new year to all.

Secondly anyone on this board is more than welcome to head up herer to Ohio and I will take you out "Flint Baggin".
I am aware of many excellent and easily accesible sites at which to collect. It may seem a little out of the way but I do the trip in reverse on numerous occassions a year and its a beautiful drive up 77

I got a really exciting (at least to me) email today. These are photos of my great-grandparents mentioned above, and some of their Flint Ridge cabs, b&w....darn! would love to see the colors. Anyhow, these are newly found treasured photos and i thought you all would enjoy.
