Meteor or not - you be the judge

Print Post
I've had this rock from PopPop Point in my pitted graphite pile for a while and the more I looked at it, the more it looks like a meteor - something which I know nothing about (of course).

It feels heavier than it looks, it's not magnetic and was as rusty as heck when I found it.

What do you think it is?  Space rock or not?  Your opinion is important. Vote!

Cheers,

Good point, Laurie  Embarrassed

Is it a meteorite or meteorwrong!

- don't forget to vote in the poll above

NON-MEMBERS CAN VOTE TOO

Like I mentioned - this is a subject I know nothing about. Undecided

But thus far, I've learned:

1.) meteor has two E's in it!

2.) It is called a meteoroid before its impact and becomes a meteor when it forms a fireball in the sky

3.) A meteorite is a solid piece of debris that originates in outer space and survives its impact with the Earth's surface.

4. Only 2 have been found in Wake county.

Is this creek rock another one?

cheers,
r

It looks to me like more garnet included matrix with the exception that this one particular has a lot more iron in the matrix.  The garnets on the outside have long weathered away leaving features similar to regmaglypts found on many meteorites.  Slabbing the specimen can tell us a lot.  For example chondrules is a feature not in terrestrial rocks that would positively ID your rock as a meteorite.  But you will need to slab your specimen to see them.

Whoaaa-regmaglypts and chondrules - new terms to me!

I looked both up and will now look for an opportunity to use both in a sentence and I bet few of my friends have ever heard of them either! Thanks, Scott  Smiley

I'll ask if Joe will cut the rock for me and we'll post the results.

In the meantime

Hi,

Other than myself, so far only one other person thinks it could be a meteor(ite-thanks, Laurie).

Joe made a cross cut which didn't show us much other than it cut easily.  Then I brought it back home and cut it in half long-wise and here it is.

Anyone know what a chondrule looks like?

The polls are still open - it's not to late to vote!

Nice to see that we have folks talking about meteorites.  As some of you know, I have a few. Don't see anything on the table I would call a meteorite.  Would love for someone to find one in NC.  Last one was about 1930 and it was plowed up. Smiley
