Peirrepont Dravite/Uvite

A friend was digging at this site in New York a few weeks ago
and brought this chunk of vein for me.

It is a pay to dig site on the Bower Power's Farm in Peirrepont, NY.
There is much information to be found by Google and here
is one link; http://www.geologicdesires.com/uvites%20from%20pierrepont.htm

My friend said the collecting has been pretty hit and miss for the past few years
but he said he hit it at just the right time this time and loaded up some nice material. Cool
It is some very interesting material and, apparently, the debate continues as to what to call it.
For years it was called Uvite, with some wanting to call it Dravite.
Now, it seems, Dravite, or Dravite-Uvite, is politically correct.
Like many minerals the only way to tell for sure which it is is to have it chemically tested.
And if you go to the trouble of having that done you could end up with one of four possibilities.
Dravite, Uvite, Fluor-Dravite, or Fluor-Uvite.
Mindat has a good breakdown of the different possible tourmalines present.

Anyway, he said he knew I would want a chunk with lots of matrix to pick at
and he was right. I love it!
here's a pic of side A. I have done considerable picking and cleaning
of the limonite-goethite oxidation around the one large crystal on this side.

The oxidized matrix reminds me of the matrix the rutile at
Graves Mtn., GA is found in.
Alot of the different layers of oxidation are so dry they will crumble like sand easily.
Anyway, see what you think.
Here is the other side followed by two close-ups of the crystal concentration.
The first close-up is taken dry and the second wet.

So I picked at this chunk for an hour or so and decided
I'd like to see it cleaned up.
It's a big piece of rust. My first thought was Muratic acid,
but then, seeing as there was no one with any common sense around,
I decide to stick it in a bucket of ol'Iron Out.
To late to talk me out of it, it's already dunked. I'm going to give it 24 hours. Shocked
Here are a final couple close-ups of some of the larger crystals.

Cool!  What's the clear/milky piece on the left side?

Well about 40 hours in Iron Out and I think we're safe. Wink
The Iron Out cleaned off all the orange limonite and other rusts
down to what looks like a thick layer of hematite with quartz and mica
and the Dravite-Uvite. I haven't read about the mineralogy of the site
so can only guess the flaky white areas are some type of feldspar?
Here's a few more shots after IO.

Side A and a close-up of the big one!

As you can see the piece is still soaking wet from sitting in the rinse water.
Here's Side B with two close-ups. The first close-up is angled
from the left of the specimen and the second is from the right.

That's a sweet specimen.  Great job on photos.  Looks like you did very well putting it in IO.  It turned out very well.   Cheesy

Pic looks great - Iron Off very seldom let's me down - it's amazing what you can see once the 'rust' clears Cheesy.
