Johnston County, that is.
I've been itchin' to get down east around Clayton in Johnston County
because of all the land they're clearing for development for a while now.
Today seemed like a good time to do it. Wink
There isn't much good rock down that way, so Scott and Mark weren't much interested in checking
it out with me. I just wanted to take a look.
Even if there aren't many good rock specimens found you always have the chance
of stumbling across an artifact or two.
With that in mind I decided to start by checking the knoll above the Neuse River
where I found my one and only whole Clovis point.
They cleared this knoll 10, or more, years ago for houses, but never got that far.
The erosion in the last 10 years is incredible. The ground where I found my Clovis
isn't even there anymore.

The white capped ridges of the eastern piedmont.

This should've been a Clovis sitting on it's pedestal waiting for me to come along
instead of just a piece of quartz.
And that's not my footprint.

And what made these circles in the dirt?
I'm guessing some sort of wasp, but it may be a beetle?
Anyone knows what made this, please let me know.

I haven't found anything on this knoll in quite a while.
The only reason I keep going back is to see if they ever clear more of it,
AND because it's where I found my ONLY WHOLE CLOVIS! Grin

Atleast today I'm not going home empty handed.........
on to the next place!

They've been blasting thru some rock here for a month or more
and I've just been wanting to take a look.

I'm guessing we're on the eastern edge of the Rolesville granite here.
The Rolesville granite is a "young" granite, geologically speaking, and,
for the most part, pretty boring stuff. It hasn't been around long enough
to be squashed and stretched and otherwise morphed/altered as much as some
of the older rocks a few miles further west.
First pic is of some generic Rolesville granite in this area.
The piece in the second pic looks almost graphitic.

Let's look at that graphitic looking piece of Rolesville almost pegmatite again,
from a different angle and a closer look at the vug on the end.

Yes, you have to look real close to find anything in the coastal plain
and most times it turns out to be nothing. More of the same. Wink

What quartz veins there are, they are mostly segregated with no faces, at all.
And very little mica. The mica is lowgrade and rotting away.
But I did find this pegmatite d**e in the freshly cut profile.
You can see where the country rock has been pushed up and this pegmatite cut right through it.
I would surmise,( Roll Eyes), that this peg formed during late stages of the Rolesville formation or soon after.
This is a good size peg for this area and there were large edges of well-formed
orthoclase crystals that fell apart as soon as you freed them.

A few diggin' shots.
In the first pic, above the trowel,
the dark line running vertically is smoky quartz.
The white line to the right of the quartz is a pithy, crumbly feldspar or Albite.
That is where the most interesting mineralization was going on.
And to the right of the white is the pinkish orthoclase feldspar.
Followed by a few more ortho crystal pics.

but it never did.
Time to move on to the next spot.

They have just regraded the surface of this soon to be homes site
in the last few days, which erased my nice well washed surface to look at.
Wasn't much to do but check the ditches, and they were very well washed!
You got to love being able to check out a vein of quartz without ever taking the first scoop of dirt.

Well, that's about it. Hope y'all enjoyed my little walk around JC.
Here's one last ditch pic for you.
Careful, it could make you dizzy and I wouldn't want you to fall in. Wink

Excellent report Joe!  I was so hoping you were going to get into a pocket with that pegmatite vein.  It was a fun virtual tour of JC rockhounding.  Thanks for sharing!   Grin

Nice tour Joe.

Give me a call next time you need a partner to look at JoCo - it's my second favorite county cause that where my grandkids live.  I'd like to find some spots in their own county to take them to hunt.  They'd like that.

cheers,
