Farm Walk - Charlotte County, VA

Here's a crude geologic map drawn on top of aerial photo of my friend's farm.  He has a story of a doorstop-size amethyst plate turned up by his father's mule-drawn plow.  This is close to the homestead.  I took a walk earlier this month, indicated by the red path, looking for sign.  More photos and narrative to come.

Charlotte County has produced some remarkable amethyst specimens, so keep looking!  Here's one example:   http://www.minerals.net/gemstone/amethyst_gemstone.aspx?img=/RoughImage/7/60/Ame...

I briefly walked the ridge of the Donald Plantation after prospecting another of my friend's fields close by. Could see some shallow pits and red soil but not much else. My friend  knows the current owner, a logger, so I might arrange a trip back to dig. Site was logged about 3 years ago and is replanted in pine and generally overgrown, so exploring is not easy.  The Donald Plantation is west of county seat Charlotte Court House.  My friend's home place farm is east if town. His other fields are northeast of the Donald Plantation. So yes, I'll keep looking!

That's some very interesting prospecting there.  The amethyst picture Laurie provided would make me want to search every inch of that area.  I hope you find signs of crystals when you go back.   Shocked

I forgot the map and my memory wasn't good enough, or I would have headed straight to where the ductile high strain zone intersects with the creek.  Next time.

Picked this up near the ductile high strain zone. Could be the migmatic paragneiss. Certainly looks partially melted and recrystalized.

So this is the Newark Supergroup conglomerate mixed clasts. Crumbly and either not very lithified, or saprolite. This turned up from plowing and under root balls of blown over trees.
