anyone know what this is

I know this is not a ROCK but my wife found this in the front yard with her new metal detector. She found this about a foot down in the front yard....secretly she doesn't know but she is doing the yard a favor. This item was not tied to her grandparents but maybe the first owners dropped it. House built in 68-69. I have an idea what it is but I would like to get other ideas.
