Wake County Geode

A friend of mine was digging a trench for work around US-1 and Tryon road in Wake county and broke into a Geode!  I've never seen a Wake County Geode or NC Geode before. Cheesy

Therefore, I think this is an unusual specimen

Very cool.  Wake county just keeps surprising me with what you find here!

something smells fishy here...
nothing personal, just playing devil's advocate
U.S. 1 is a well traveled road, I think someone tossed this out their window on their way back from Indiana or Kentucky...

I'm certainly glad you brought up that "question", dave.
First look at the geode and I was thinking about Kentucky, too.
But nothing's funner than a good "question". Wink
Now we have been finding crystals all along Tryon Rd for years,
but we have not found ANY on that southern end of it.
Old timers say they were finding smokies and some amethyst in the area
of McGregor Downs and Village 30-40 years ago. But, again, we haven't seen any signs of them.
And we would expect to see the fissure cyrstals we see a little east, not geodes.
Now, just from what I've seen, the soils north of Hwy 64 look like a fissure could pop up anywhere,
but south of 64 you start getting into more Triassic looking sediments.
This area would be good to look closely at on your geologic map, Collin.
As rockytop was saying recently in another thread, there's no telling what you might find
when you start digging a trench here in the eastern piedmont. Smiley
It does qualify as "unusual" imo.
So you know what comes next, Where, how deep, in-situ, and are there anymore?

Hi,

Good find - I've been hunting for one too!

Joe's last question is most interesting: Are there any more?  Only way to find out is get out and hunt.

I've said it before and I'll repeat it again - Wake County Rocks!

cheers,

The first thing I thought of was someone throwing a geode there from another location.   My friend works on the maintenance team for Mcgreggor, but he didn't want to say exact location.  I believe he was only 2 or so feet down, I'll have to confirm.   I wish it was somewhere we could all go to and look for geodes but it's private.  I might go check out a creek around the area sometime.   Who knows what might be found around there.  I'll have to check it out on the map for sure Joe!  thanks!

Also, Joe that was the only one found but it was complete.  I think he gave the other half to his girlfriend

Just found out that my friend played a really funny joke on me and bought this at the flea market for 3 dollars.   Grin

I have to say that he got me pretty good.  But I'm going to get him back even better.  Cool
