Quartz Geodes

Since my son and I had to cancel our trip for tomorrow as he is sick. The wife and I bought him a break open your own geode set. While not as fun as being out in the field, it provided me an opportunity to practice photographing them. Being new to photographing rocks I tried a couple different things. Anyway here is my attempt.

If you like close up photos, check out Scott's posts on how he uses photo stacking software to get multiple fields in sharp focus in one resulting photo. Very cool. 30 years ago I was semi pro photographer and darkroom rat when I worked on newspapers. Today I am a minimalist with my phone camera. I like that it's always available, and the challenge of framing decent shots with limited means. But Scott's methods and equipment setups are tempting, I have to admit. Maybe after retirement.

Yeah, not bad at all! Smiley
Those weird quartz formations in the last pic look like mini-gwindels!
Where did that geode come from?

Great photography for just getting into mineral photography.  It can be tedious but you learn something and get better at it every time you do it.  Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the feedback on the photos. Based on the DOF issues due to the shapes involved. I can see where stacking would work nicely. As of now I do not own a macro stacking rail. I would also need photo stacking software as I only use Lightroom as it suits my current needs.

I am not sure where the geodes were from as the kit did not specify. This was the kit
