Which Way Did It Go?

I'm pretty sure this is the broken basal portion of a spearpoint.
Can anyone tell me which way it goes?  Huh
Pic 1 or Pic 2?

Well geez Joe both look quite compatible as potential orientations.  If I had to make a decision I would guess pic # 1.  And the reason why is because I think the ear on the orientation for # 2 would be too weak if it went out that far.  The ear on # 1's orientation would seem to be a little more sturdier (less prone to break).

That's some sound reasoning there, Scott. Smiley

nope, its clearly a fossilized stone crab claw.

I vote for #2 as the orientation. For no other reason other than it just looks better to me.

Laurie's right.
10,000 years ago one of these would come free with every case of longnecks you bought. Grin

Okay,okay, enough with the suspense.
Dave, you got it.
The straight right side in the first pic is the base.
It does kindof look like an impact fracture to the point in that pic.
But no, as you can see in the second pic, that's the other notch.

This would be the base of a very nicely made Kirk Corner-Notched point
dating to around 9500BP.
You're right about the "ears" on these type, Scott. It is very hard to find them undamaged.
There are many different "variations" on the ears, or barbs, and bases on these things.
Some of these variations happen over a period of time.
Below is a picture of a large corner-notched kirk I found above the Eno River
and the beginning of Falls Lake. The one on the right I found along the Neuse River
east of Raleigh in the Hedingham development. They look like they are made from the same,
or very similar, material.
Anyway, the large one in the middle doesn't have any barbs, now............
But if you resharpen it a couple of times, and it gets shorter, it gets to looking more like the one on the right.

That is why it is so hard, sometimes, to come up with one example of a "type"
that typifies that whole period, or culture.
And even tho they hunted together and would help protect each other,
the Millers made theirs a little different than the Moores. Roll Eyes

Well Joe set me straight on why I was wrong with my assumption on the orientation.  This was a very informative and educational post.  Thanks for posting it Joe.  The smallest details can hold very valuable information.
