The Schiele Museum, Gastonia, NC

It has been 10 years since I have been to the Schiele
and I have to admit I was a little disappointed with what they have done with their NC geology exhibit.
It was not the large room with rows of well lit cases I remember.
Infact it seems it has been reduced to an overall fundamental educational exhibit
with an emphasis on local known hot spots such as the Foote Mine.
They did have a couple of beautiful amethyst clusters from the region,
but the lighting was so poor I didn't bother to try taking pictures of them.
Someone else can add pics of them later. Wink
I do not want to sound too harsh about the museum.
It is still one of my favorites and much more than you can see in one day.

It is a travesty what happened to this museum.  20 years ago it had an outstanding mineral collection with top end NC specimens and excellent displays.  Then a new director came in who stated publicly that he "hated rocks".  He ended up getting rid of nearly everything of value and now all they have are crap examples.  Those Foote specimens wouldn't even make it on to my display shelf!!  Shame on them!  These museums are for the publics enjoyment, not the directors enjoyment.  Do they even still have the huge reconstructed Elmwood Mine pocket?  I wouldn't even .be surprised if they got rid of that amazing display.  "Largest purple apatite" my a....s!  Somebody ask Jack Eaker about that!

I agree with Laurie.  The Schiele had one the best and largest collections of Foote Mine specimens known when I first visited the museum in the mid 1980s.  This sad story has been repeated at museums all over the US.

No, Laurie, I'm afraid the Elmwood reconstructed pocket is gone, too,
along with about the whole mineral collection!
It is very sad. I wonder what they did with all those specimens?
I missed that auction. Angry
