Laurel Creek Mine NE Georgia

Has anyone visited the Laurel Creek Mine in NE GA?  Any thoughts?  I am thinking of checking it out soon and am wondering if anyone else is interested.  I've scouted a nice camping spot but probably need a buddy for navigating down into the creek and back out.  Could be a bit strenuous.  I currently reside in NE Atlanta and am friends with Scott.

Thanks
John

If it weren't so far away.  Hope you find some nice corundum!  (I might have considered it, until you mentioned you were friends with Scott.  Gee, you blew it on that one!  LOL)

If this is the Laurel Creek corundum locality in Rabun Co. (northeast GA), I heard a few years back that it's off limits to collecting.  It's on Forest Service property.  A lot of folks have complained about it.

There are several old amethyst mines in Rabun Co., but most are on private land, and Forest Service property, too.

According to the Forest Service website rockhounding appears to generally be allowed for personal recreation.  Has someone posted an exception for the area in question?

See the following: http://www.fs.usda.gov/detailfull/conf/recreation/?cid=stelprdb5120146

The website is rarely updated in any timely fashion.  The federal government generally does not have the staff or money to keep these things updated.  I recommend contacting the Forest Service office in Blairsville, GA to see if there are any updates.  For example, some FS areas are off limits to mineral collecting, such as the Grimshawe Mine, parts of Ray Mine, Walker Creek (Meeper Mine), and in some Buck Creek areas in North Carolina.
