Lot of construction going on

There is a pile of construction going on on the 98 bypass between capital blvd and 1A.  My back is still worth crap but those that can dig might want to check it out.

Thanks for the heads-up, Dan. They must've just started recently.
I was out there a couple of weeks ago and didn't see the development.
That's some of the best preserved of the old rotten pegmatite that covers that area.
Haven't found any quartz crystals there but have seen some highgrade pink feldspar worth collecting for cab material.

Close to the "garnet hill" I have on my to-do list for future Raleigh visits.  Maybe the future should arrive sooner than later.

I took the plunge into collecting at urban construction sites and went to this place today.  As Joe mentions, there's lots of pegmatite and pink feldspar.  And lots of very dark smoky quartz in shapeless blocks and pieces.  A bulldozer has cut through the area and created walls that are about 2 feet high.  I saw thin veins of quartz in some spots in the walls -- but there were no points, just small fragments with no particular shape.  I kept a few of the largest pieces of feldspar.

Thanks for the report Victor.  After all the rain we had it must have been great conditions for hunting.  Sometimes the feldspar through that area contains tiny gemmy garnets.  Unfortunately, quartz crystals seem to be altogether lacking there.  We've found amethyst off highway 98 on Jones Dairy Rd. and clear quartz crystals further north on highway 96 towards Youngsville -- but in between we've just not seen the crystallization.

There are a few construction sites up my way in Watauga county and I wondered if "hunting them" when no work was going on was kosher or not - do you all find any issues?

Try going after on sundays, usually there is no one working. Make sure there are no "no tresspassing" signs. If anyone approaches just tell them what you're doing and they'll usually leave you alone. Easier to ask for forgiveness than permission. Look for cuts exposing "in situ" ground so you can clearly see what is happening with the geology. Always keep your eyes open for surface finds. They will lead you to the best spots. Cheers.
