For Joe's progress photos working cabochons from a variety of moonstone I sent him from a creek I collect in central Virginia.

Here's Joe's photo of the package contents after they arrived with some jostling by USPS.  One or two stones must have crumbled in transit (the gravel in upper left of photo).  So USPS is rougher than my "will it break/crumble from twisting it in my hands" test.

We agreed I would send a variety of quality, and Joe would get to experiment on the lesser stones, saving the best for last.

Great, can't wait to see the finished product.  I've not played with moonstone before.

Well I don't want to keep you in suspense any longer then necessary, tim. Wink
When first playing with some new rough I like/(have) to just pick a piece and start grinding on it.
I chose the wide flat-ish piece, about 2 x 3 x 1 inches. I figured if I just ground it down
like it was then we'd get a pretty good look at the material from all angles.
Here's 3 pics of the rough piece and then 3 pics of it at midway point.

Big difference, huh? Cool
I meant to look up the difference between "schiller" and "adularescence" before I got into this.
I'm not sure if both are applicable in this case?
Anyway, what we really want to know is, How do you cut this stuff to get that "shiny" face?
There are shiny surfaces all through it, and I will try to get more pics of that later,
but the real gemmy planes are running vertically in the separate layers of the stone
and you want to try and cut your gemstone roughly at that angle.
That is why it would be hard to cut a good gemstone and they would be rather small, but we'll give it a go, eventually. Wink

You can see the planes within the layers in this next pic and a close-up just to be sure.

So yes, the left side of the above stone would be best for the top of the cab.
You could cut a couple dozen or more stones from that piece.
But we don't have to get that extreme, now. You can do that later if you want.
I'm not seeing any sign of blue or any other color yet, but am still holding out hope.
And there are many surfaces that will shimmer and shine.

Here's one more piece of rough that I decided to just cut down like it was.
There wasn't much else to be done with it. I suspect this is the piece that made most of those small pieces in the box.
We'll dome the top and flatten the bottom.

So here's where we are up to now.
Top and bottom views of cabs done to 1200 grit. No polish yet.

Update on the CVMP:

I did have real nice before pics of this piece showing the nice "clear" layers
but they are on my new 2 year old Toshitba laptop that unfortunately has met with
the jarring accident I have feared it was destined to meet and I don't know if they will ever be retrieved.
What ever happened to "Take a lickin' and keep on tickin'!?

Anyway, this piece was about the second best looking one.
Although small and/or narrow, this piece had several nice layers of "solid" non-fractured looking material.
I have learned that you have to make a cut or cut a window in this material before you can make a guess
at what might be the best angle. This piece turned out to be just the opposite of what I was expecting.

first pic is the whole piece re-assembled. last pic are the pieces of the top half I plan to work with.

This pic is the bottom half smoothed down a little.  There is not much point
in trying to take it down any further because it is falling apart,
although you might end up with something if you tried.

And here's what we got out of the top half.
I cut the right half of the top in half.  The smallest cab, top left, is the top half of that.
The bottom half of that piece is what I thought would be the best material
but it just kept falling apart. It is the bottom left cab.
Top right cab is what I got out of the left side of the top.
Bottom right is a leftover piece. Roll Eyes
And again, all cabs have been worked up to 1200 grit.
I'll polish them all together, .....soon.

Nice!  Summer of 2014 I had my limited rebuilt lapidary equipment set up in the back yard.  Mostly I worked with harder material like unakite just trying to get the feel of the process of rough rounding and making a flat surface.  When I tried 2 or 3 moonstone chunks, it was similar experience -- hard to tell what will actually hold together and what you think looks solid might not be.  I gave up on the moonstone and went back to more solid stuff since I was just beginning.  Throughout and after winter "life got in the way" and all my equipment is still under tarps feeling neglected.  So I am grateful for Joe taking on this project and we all get to see how this material works under experienced hands.  Last Saturday I visited the Morefield Mine as they were closing for the day just to talk to Sam Dunaway and Nico, one of the employees/miner who I've talked to most often after Sam.  I brought some of the moonstone to show off (they were impressed) and gave them each some to work if they wanted.  Nico makes and sells jewelry (Facebook page "Twisting Nature") so I hope he does something with it.

Trick or Treat! It seems this years candy of choice is Nestle's Crunch! Cheesy

Alright, here's one more "chip" probably broken piece from the box.
Couldn't do much but just grind it down as is and see what was there.
