Raleigh Crabtree, 2015

Last Saturday the Cape Fear Mineral Club invited the Tar Heel Club
to join them on a fieldtrip to the Crabtree Quarry in Raleigh, NC.
The Crabtree Quarry is presently owned by Hanson and is situated on Crabtree Creek in Western Wake County.
It has long been known as a source of some very rare minerals for Wake County, and even the world.
A slot came open for this fieldtrip so since it is only 10 minutes down the road I decided to go and take a look.

We started the day with a nice stroll thru the gravel piles to the overlook.

Yes, you won't see quarries like this much anymore.
This quarry was started in the late 1940's, which was before all the mining rules and safety regs in place today.
They are now right about 400 feet deep.

Here's some more pics of the day.
The hammer operator was nice enough to "blast" a few boulders that folks were picking out for him. Smiley
Didn't manage to find any really good specimens to bring home
but it's always nice to take a look.
Thanks to the Cape Fear Club and Hanson for having us.

Here is a 5.5 X 3 inch piece from the Crabtree trip.  Collin found a very large block with this colorful area in it.  We got the quarry manager to break up the block with the crusher, and Collin let me have this piece.  The small black and greenish crystals look exotic but with magnification they turn out to be biotite mica.  There's also white calcite, tiny quartz crystals, and what I think is pink calcite.

Excellent report Joe.  The Crabtree mine is always a treat for the eyes.  I'm glad you and Collin came home with some good specimens.  Thanks for the report!

That freshly broken piece and picture of Victor's does look real nice.
You may have some Ankerite on there.
