Mrs. Helen Smith Propst - Propst Farm

Print Post
I just got word from one of my club members that Mrs. Propst owner of Propst Farm passed away on December 20th. A group of friends from the Gaston Club were going to go there this weekend but have postponed. I will contact her son-in-law Ronald Lineberger in a week or so to see when it be appropriate for everyone one to begin digging again.

I saw where someone said they asked for people to hold off until the New Year to go digging there. I will check tomorrow night and see what the outlook is.

Thanks NCGrampa this will benefit many rockhounds that frequent the Propst Farm.  Helen was a very sweet lady.

I'd like to organize a propst farm dig for RHL members soon.  It would be a nice time to hang out, talk rocks, and find corundum!

Digging is welcome again at Propst Farm. The family appreciated that activity was rather quite during this time.
Fee is $20.00 for the day and the can is still set up. The area in front of the barn is only open until March and holes in that area need to be filled back in.
For those who don't know, it has rained lots and lots in the past 2 weeks, especially earlier this week and many of the holes in back will be filled with water. Please remember to use caution.

Thanks Peter.  It was good meeting you there this past Sunday Saturday.  I had a good time finding the corundum.  Hope to see you soon in the future.  I'll post pictures soon of our finds that Sunday Saturday.

Or Saturday ... Good to meet you too. I had a question thou... What did you two call those groves going across like a pie with the hole in the center of that piece? I can't hear well and it was hard to understand it.

Oops, yeah I forgot it was Saturday.

Trapiche corundum.  Here's a website I found with some good examples and definitions: http://www.starruby.in/store/info/trapiche-ruby

I had a blast at the Propst and it was so nice to see old friends.
I see this location as a unique set up and akin to the olden golden days of digging that I missed out on (money in a can, honor system and freedom).
I can't wait to go back.

Definitely a place on my (5-gallon) bucket list.

For another surviving "money in the can" site, see my field trips post on Nethers Farm flint in central Ohio.

What part of Ohio? Ohio seems to be calling to me (rather the minerals there), there are a lot of minerals there too.

About 30 miles east of Columbus.  (40.002308, -82.191292) Address is 3680 Flint Ridge Road, Hopewell, OH 43746, but mapping programs put that in the middle of the farm fields.  Mapping programs show the farmhouse as 3726 Flint Ridge Road, or thereabouts.  Most of Flint Ridge Road, including the part that runs through the Flint Ridge State Memorial, runs east-west.  The Nethers Flint Farm is on a spur that runs more north-south.  Farm is a bit north of the intersection with Hidden Springs Road.  Usually flying an American flag.  Farmhouse on east side of road; flint quarries on west side of road.  Instructions to pay are on the porch if Mrs. Nethers isn't home.

I just looked up some pictures of the flint there, and wow, it looks really nice!  I had never before thought much about flint being "collectible"  Wink  I might have to add it to  my 5-gallon bucket list too!

And since this thread is actually about the Propst corundum, I hope to get out there again.  I think the $20 in the can in the garage is $20 well spent.
