Moonstone Creek Again

Sean, Chip and I braved the soggy conditions to cure the stir-crazies and stretch our legs (8 amongst the 3 of us). Explored upper stretches of this little unnamed creek in central Virginia. Best find was some moonstone in solid matrix (more often the matrix is saprolite). Also found some saprolite exposure that yields kyanite blades, so there is one source for the float blades found in the farm fields. Even though we started late in the day, we stayed until dark, climbing and hiking enough so that all slept well - some on the way home in the car.

Found source of the omnipresent rotten garnet balls seen downstream.
The moonstone in hard matrix.

Creek gravel finds. The quartz pebble appears water clear if not for the stream tumble abrasions.

Technical note for Scott: All photos taken with and uploaded from iPhone. Photos I took in "portrait mode" appear distorted into "landscape mode" while viewing the RHL via my iPhone. When I get a chance to view from a desktop computer, I will add a note.

As a side note, I consider the bypass garden shears a must carry tool. For the terrain I usually explore, shears take much less effort than a machete when all I want to do is clear a minimal path through a tangle of thorny vines, or clean off roots from a creek bank.

Yep, the shears do make an easier job of it. Good tip!
Thanks for all the pics, Tim. That's a nice looking little creek
and a real pretty moonstone insitu specimen.
Good job! Smiley
