I grew up in Alamance County and had some great collecting experiences there, especially in the Snow Camp area. I used to go to the Major Hill pyrophyllite mine regularly and found beautiful radial pyrophyllite, clear quartz crystals, pyrite, etc. The quarry is closed now as it's part of a private development.
