Wake County Amethyst

It started out a beautiful overcast day. The light was perfectly diffuse allowing us see everything without the distraction of shadows.  Then the rain came and drenched us real good.  But it came and went giving us the rest of the day to explore in the cool dry air. I found a nice crystallized crack that ran through a very large vein of quartz. The druse turned out to be amethyst.  Here was one of the nice amethyst druse clusters I found today. I wanted to take a picture of the neat oxide coating before I soaked it in the acid in case it goes away.

This specimen is 10 x 9 x 5 cm in size.  These pictures show how the crystallized structure coated the entire edge of the seem I found in the large quartz vein.  This is a small section of that seem.  It was a thin seem reaching only as large as 2 cm wide at its thickest point.

The real question I was asking was, "Is that really amethyst, or is it just red hematite giving it a purplish hue?"

A closer look was necessary.

And closer still.  Now you definitely see the amethyst, but then something else -- a hematite phantom underneath the amethyst layer.  And at this magnification you can also make out hematite needles.

These were the best pieces found from this pocket. I could only just now photograph them because I had them sitting in acid for the previous two days. The weird oxide surface features turned out to be included in the quartz and were not affected by the acid.

And you want me to post some pics of the "yard" rock from there.
HA HA HA Glad you don't ask for much! Wink
Great pics of the unusual growth and inclusions in this strange sliver of crystallization you found!
I love the "swirly" surface hematite inclusions. The crystals at the top of this piece have some of it.
This "yard rock" is about 10" high and 8" wide on sides. So obviously you can see why it was too big and bulky
for Scott to carry through the now knee deep mud alllllllllll the way back to the car
and left it for me. Grin

That's a pretty cool yard rock Joe.  Thanks for posting it up.  Trust me when I say I had room for that in my backpack and never once thought about leaving it because it was too big. I did clearly say I would take it home if you didn't. Just want to clear that up with everyone in case they don't get your joking around  Wink

Here's a good close look at the hematite needles in one of the terminations.

Very Interesting and great close-up of those needles, Scott.
I can't see them that well with my loupe!
I wonder if we've seen needles like that from somewhere else recently?

And here's quick video I made because the pictures can't really capture the depth of these specimens.  You must make sure to crank your youtube video quality as high as it will go so you can see the detail. You can do that by clicking on the gear icon in your youtube interface.

Here's another specimen from this spot. This very strange specimen reminded me of the stalactite hematite structures found at Graves Mountain. Whatever this was has been replaced by quartz chalcedony. Half of this specimen has an overgrowth of very tiny druse quartz crystals.
