Collin went with me on one of my wild goose chases a few months ago to "check" a spot.
Sorry about that, Collin, and fyi they still haven't done any more clearing out there.
But I did want to take a look at the fishtraps in the Neuse River there and I got to put these pics somewhere.
Folks, including me, had been hunting artifacts all around this spot for years
and I never heard anyone talk about the rocky drop in the river being fishtraps.
So I hunted the area on and off for years until finally one year I approached it by canoe coming up the river.
I had never looked at it from that perspective before, but as soon as I saw it,
I knew that's what it had been used for.
About 20 years ago, when the area became threatened by development, I got the guy that first took me to the spot to turn in a site report in to the state.
Anyway, here are a couple pics of the traps from the bank of the river.
The first pic is of the whole rocky drop or ford across the river. In this pic the traps start on the
far side of the river and form a rough "V" shape with near side of the V
going up the middle of the pic and out of the pic middle right.
The second pic is a cropped version of just the traps and we are looking slightly up river.

Cool pics Joe!  I remember that day!  It was fun going out and poking around.  Wonder how many artifacts are actually in the water around the area or if they've all been washed away.

Anyway, here is a "behind the scenes" picture

Well I'll be! Glad to see you got my back, Collin. Wink

Since we didn't find anything that day
here's a pic of some artifacts from there that date to the time period the fishtraps would've been used.
The pieces of pottery are all rim sherds, except for the crude pipe stem.

I've always got your back Joe  Wink

Those are awesome, how long ago did you find those?  I like that pipe, looks like they were partying back then!

Don't you know it. We were all partying back then.
Can't bring all those beer cans down the river with you so a bag
of oranges, a bag of salted peanuts, and a fifth or two of Meyers rum works pretty good.
And if you ever happen to find yourself in the position where you're wondering if shovels
will work as good as paddles in a canoe on the river,...they won't. Wink

I collected those artifacts about 30 years ago.
A very general age range for those artifacts I'm guessing would be 700AD- 1700AD.
The pipe is typical of your everyday use type and there wasn't much more to it except a simple bowl
or depression in the end of the stem. This looks like it separated at the bowl.
I would guess it dates to 1500-1700AD.

Thanks for explaining Joe, pretty cool you can still see the burn marks at the end of it!  Was it in 1 piece when you found it or was it glued back together?
