I found this on Edisto Island is South Carolina. I have many theories on what it is (bone, petrified wood etc..). But I am really interested in what appear to be cut marks on it. Thoughts?

Hey Neal,

I've collected fossils at Edisto Island Beach since 1975 and have a good assortment of Pliocene and Pleistocene material from there.  Your fossil looks like a manatee rib bone.  Is the specimen solid and heavy, and is marrow channel a small diameter?  If so, it's manatee.

You can only speculate what made the cut marks in the rib.  Most likely postmortem and a predator / scavenger with sharp teeth.  Paleo points have never been found washed up on the beach, so it's probably safe to say that a human did not make them, but there were plenty of sharks and large carnivores during those periods.

Great find.  Show us more of your Edisto finds.

Thanks, Dennis. I would not have guessed manatee, but agree,
due to the age of the fossil the marks would have to be from a shark or some other animal.
Pretty cool piece. It's always nice when there's something a little extra on a specimen.

Neal,

Check out the fossil section further down the RHL subjects.  The very last post is one I started years ago where I have photos of some of my fossils, including Edisto Island.

I look forward to seeing some more of your Edisto Island fossils.

Dennis
