Josh and I took advantage of the beautiful weather and went to check out a few spots old and new. First stop an old drainage channel, not really enough water to be a creek, but just enough to be messy and muddy. Many nice smoky crystals with both rutile and schorl tormaline have been found here, just not this day. It brought us hope in the form of in situ fissures with crystallized faces, just no whole crystals today.  Sad

The second place a new construction site off Lake Boone Trail! Lots of neat signs and alpine-type fissures, alas not a crystal in site. The segregation quartz (following the direction of the foliation) here looked almost like it was kyanite. Instead it was just weirdly formed quartz.

Third stop, a small creek off of Wade Avenue.  This creek has produced many crystals in the past, but this weekend it chose to keep its treasure hidden. Garnet infused mica schist and graphite are found all around here. It did however give up a few tasty wild blackberries near its banks.

I went solo the next day on Sunday. I checked out another construction site off Lake Boone Trail.  Looks like this construction site is near finished so there wasn't much left to look at where in situ earth was available.  I did manage to find a very large pyrite cube cluster. You would have thought I found this at Glendon for its size, but its all Raleigh for sure. The outer patina or rind was a brown limonite but on the inside the golden pyrite was still intact. If you look closely at the last picture you can see the gold pyrite exposed on the specimen.

Thanks for the report, Scott. Looks like you got to check on quite a few places.
I was wondering what y'all were going to get into the weather was so nice!

A closer look at the back of that giant pyrite cube.   Shocked

Looks like shattered garnet fragments.

Scott:

That's an impressive pyrite cube.  Wake Co. continues to amaze me.  Great photos, too.
