Hanover County with Grandson

Grandson Michael only had a few weeks with Rebecca and I this summer. Rock hunting was on his short list of must-do activities, so we chose a fairly cool day between all this stormy weather to go creek crawling.

Can't start them too young.

Some was worth taking home. Moonstone and quartz. Not the best but some might tumble. Most too crumbly.

Nice haul, Tim! Way to train those rock-pups.
Speaking of rock-pups, where was the seasoned professional rockhound, Chip?

Creek crawling is an excellent rockhounding summer choice.  Looks like it paid off.  Hope the mosquitoes weren't too bad. The ticks and mosquitoes have already attacked me pretty good this summer.  Thanks for sharing!

Joe, fear not. Chip got to go too and was sporting his summer haircut.  Here he is with Rebecca; then running around; then hogging the hole I diked so I could chase a vein below water level (wasn't worth the effort in the end); and finally, tired and waiting under a scraggly shrub as we crazy humans pushed the day. (On the way back to the car, Rebecca found one last promising vein. You know what happens next in that situation!)

Scott, the mosquitos were tolerable but the ticks were many, both the larger dog ticks and the tiny seed ticks. All the rain this season seems to be supporting an upswing in parasite pest populations! We are having problems in our yard but you can't hardly find time to spray between all this rain.

Looking at photos again I should note this was Phase One of Chip's summer haircut. Rebecca wore out cheap buzz cut clippers on his triple coat, so he still had the curly head. Later we bought a "pro groomer" clipper and sheared him down all over.

Joe & Scott:  Rebecca and I are overdue a trip to Raleigh to visit kinfolk and friends. Maybe we can talk Robert into a field trip somewhere beyond "his" creek, but I can't blame him for sticking close to home with the results he gets!
Smiley
Anyway as soon as we know we are indeed heading down that way, I will let you know.  We tend to make last minute plans, so it won't be much notice, but we hope the stars will align for time to hang out a bit with the RHL crew.
Cheers -- Tim

Great! Just let us know and we'll try to make something happen. Wake County has plenty of places to check out.
