Its been awhile since I had a chance to explore the area around me so I decided to take a look at the Clear Creek area which I believe is on the south side of the Diablo Range. The area has a large deposit of serpentine rock which means breathing in any dust in the area is hazardous to your health because of the abundancy of asbestos. As long as you're being smart of what you're doing then everything will be peachy. The only thing that I found to be disappointing was that a permit is required to use a vehicle in the recreation area which I obtained but, I didn't know that other permits were required to travel further into the mountain range.

With the gate blocking my access I decided to park my truck and head out on foot. I didn't get far up the creek because the temperatures got pretty hot out there quick. I did manage to find what I believe is, and correct me if I'm wrong, Uvarovite on Chromite. They are definitely water worn and the bright green color really stood out. Hope the pic with the 60x magnifier is clear enough.

I'll try to find a different route into the Diablo Range next time. I would love to get my hands on some Benitoite.

I started heading back North around noon and decided to stop at the Los Muertos Creek in the small town Paicines and found what I believe is jasper. Don't know what type of jasper but one looks like it has some rosy quartz veins. Theres a lot of meta chert? or colorful brecciated chert? out there as well. I also pulled a painted lady butterfly out of the creek before it drowned. Mud rocks with tiny dendrites and what I believe is a plasma agate.

Awesome report Wailele! A vicarious journey to California I'll take any day. The agatized chert jasper rock you found is fantastic. The little snakelike cracks running through and its over all pattern is beautiful. The plasma agate was a great score too. The uvarovite on chromite specimen is real neat. Thanks for the great report with great pictures!

Yes, Great report, wailele! Thanks for all the great pics!
No shortage of signage in that Clear Creek area. Love the "Do Not Drown" sign.
Looks like real good potential with the jaspers and agates, and a beautiful place to collect!

Thanks guys. I'll plan my next trip better next time and hopefully I can find a good spot where I can find some benitoite and check out some abandoned mine pits. I heard you can still find Neptunite there.
