Some pics I took recently of some cabs I made out of some leftover Brazilian Rutilated Quartz.
Just Kidding! There's no such thing as "leftover" rutilated quartz.  Smiley

Gosh, that sure is gorgeous and the cut and shape are great because it really showcases the rutiles perfectly.

My old bead and gem supplier used to email me when she got rutilated quartz in, and would describe them to me as 'nice and hairy' before posting her pictures of them on her site... years later and I still can't un-associate that from rutile quartz unfortunately  Smiley

That's allright, I like Hairy. Just the first time I heard it.
I guess when it comes to rutile the hairier the better. Smiley
Speaking of hairy............
I just got some polished Brazilian Rutile Nuggets from a friend that tumbled them.
I'm finding out that due to the thickness of the quartz, it is hard to get a good picture to capture the whole piece.
Here's one particularly hairy piece that I picked out for myself because of the color and the "shelves" of hematite.
This piece is about 3 x 2 x 2 inches.

Playing around with pictures Picasa and I came up with this "painting".
I'm calling it, "On the Path to the ol'Fishing Hole".

Yeah, yeah, yeah,  so you gotta stretch a little. Cheesy

Very cool Joe.  Recently I've been looking to add a Brazilian Rutilated quartz crystal to my collection.

It seems like there is a lot of bulk on the market, but very few crystals.  And if you find a nice crystal with rutile, it's very expensive.

Do you have any pics of the raw material you started with to make these?

Well yeah, Collin, that all sounds about right.
You do see alot more rough than crystals, and yes, good specimens are going to cost some. Seems like there was a shortage of the rough 3 or 4 years ago and the price for it shot thru the roof. Now you can prices all over the place, but it does seem like "quality" is an important factor. Which is a good thing.
As far as a nice crystal specimen goes, it ought to be real fun shopping! Real "crystal clean" specimens are really rare because the rutile itself creates veils and fractures for the quartz. And, of course, most of the time the bigger they get, the more "unattractive" they get.
Like the one pictured below. Several of the cabs pictured above came from the missing center section of the really large crystal end pieces. The base piece on the left is full of rutile, but the crystal was basically "good" cutting material. Not very showy. And it is only "good" quality. and not "great" because of how cloudy it is.
The pieces behind the crystals are some tumbled rough John did. I'd say average to above average in size for rough pieces.

Like I say it would be fun to go shopping. The ones with the circular spays coming out of a nice chunk of silvery hematite are real nice. Smiley

Thanks for the explanation and pictures Joe!  That makes sense about the Rutile creating the fractures making it rare to see a nicely formed full crystal.  Here is an example of what I am on the search to buy someday, however, it will probably come at a high price.  Cheers!

Pretty. I'd like something like that, too. I'll keep my eye out.

Here's one more tumbled nugget of the Brazilian rutilated quartz from John that I thought was pretty enough for some pictures.
This piece has a thick mat of rutile down one side and from the other side you can see these feint phantom planes ever so slightly dusted with green chlorite.

Don't mind me, folks, just passing through on a flat bed loaded with turkeys headed to your local grocery, restaurant, and delicatessen! Wink

Picked up this strange piece of rutilated quartz at Grassy Creek. I wanted to see what the contrast between the red and gold rutile needles looked like polished up.
This is the first cab I've done with it and the first pic has a rough slab for a little "before and after" effect.
Pics 2 & 3 are of the front of the cab, back lit.
Pics 4 & 5 are playing around with contrast. Roll Eyes

Looks pretty awesome. I really think the red gives it a nice pop, is it that vibrant in person?

All depends on the light, JMB. The cab really needs to be well backlit for it to "pop".
This was my "test" piece and I was just trying to use as much of the slab as possible in one big cab.

I absolutely love this material.  Here is my first cab with some fine golden rutile inclusions.

You did a real nice job on that cab, dirt!
That's a difficult shape to make look even on all sides. Well done!
I think this is one of everybody's fav materials.
