(^ Austin Powers reference)

Hi all --

I know a few folks on here but haven't posted until now. I live north of Baltimore and have been collecting in Maryland for 11 years with much success. I discovered a quartz crystal location in Baltimore County that's pretty unique. It's a small simple pegmatite d**e with veins of light gray smoky quartz that open up into small vugs with clear to smoky crystals. They're small but nice for MD and the pegmatite matrix pieces are a really cool contrast.

And FWIW there are lots of sites in this state but about 99% lie in state parkland or on private property so collecting is extremely difficult and requires a lot of research and leg work, and several sites have closed even since I've lived here. Occasionally construction or development projects create new collecting localities but nothing like in the NC Piedmont where it seems lots of folks on here collect.

Anyways, just wanted to say hi and hope to post more in the future.

Welcome, Hydro.  Yes, there aren't many places that combine the fertile crystal grounds and construction activity like the Raleigh region.  In my central Virginia area the construction around Richmond will yield low-grade petrified wood, occasionally with druzy, but the pegmatite and quartz hunting grounds are further west in the more rural areas.  Nevertheless, it's always great to hound your own back yard!  Cheers and happy hunting.

Hi Lawrence,

Good to hear you're keeping tabs of all the good rockhounding up north.  I'd definitely like to head up north sometime even if just to try to collect Herkimers.  I've created a Maryland thread so you can post your crystal finds. Glad to have you here at RHL!
