Hey everyone!
I'm from Wolf Laurel NC (about 45 minutes from Asheville NC). My rockhou ding adventures started in 2011 when I spent a summer in Alaska with a friend. We stayed at an old copper mine where I found a lot of malachite and azurite! I hadn't done much rockhounding since until this past spring when my girlfriend showed me some crystals her great grandfather had found working at the Wray Mica Mine. I thought we didn't have anything like that in North Carolina so I wanted to check it out! Sure enough! We found some nice rocks! Mica, garnets, quartz, and my favorite beryl! We've been to several mines, but none have produced as much or as large beryl as the wray mine. We tried to find the Mas-Celo Kyanite mine that is supposed to be on the ridge of the mountain that the wray mine is on, but we couldn't find it after hours of hiking. So if anyone knows how to get there, I'm all ears!

Welcome to the Lounge!

You can try private messaging Rick Jacquot, but I'm not sure how actively he checks the Lounge.  Or see if there's contact info via his own web site wncrocks.com

Welcome to the RHL BerylliumWilliam! The Mas-celo kyanite location is quite a hike and all up hill from the Ray -- you definitely must be in shape. I couldn't give you specific directions because I've not been myself. Good luck on your search.  Hopefully someone else can chime in on some specific directions as I know at least a few RHL members have been to Mas-Celo a few times.

Thanks Scott!
I hiked all the way to the top and followed an old dirt road to a spot with a huge rock face and a pond that was draining across the road. there was a pile of boulders at the bottom of the rock face in the pond that looked like it could have been where a cave collapsed...
Could that have been it? I did find a rock or 2 that looked like it might have had kyanite in it, but it wasn't blue and there wasn't very much of it...
I head read somewhere that I need to follow the ridge. If so how far?
So if anyone knows, please help

This picture is from up above looking at the base of the rock face where some boulders had piled up at the bottom in he pond. Could the mine have caved in?
