I found this in my parent's yard between Asheville and Swannanoa. It looks like garnets, but they aren't completely round. Also, could this mean that there are more nearby or would someone have had to have brought it over here? This rock broke off of a much larger rock

That's a nice rock find, William!
Those most likely are weathered "Iron" garnets and looks like they get pretty good size.
What is the host rock? A mica schist or a piece from a pegmatite?
If you figure that out then you can look at a geologic map of that area and see where it might have come from.
Theoretically, that is.
And when you find more you can cut one open and see what it looks like inside!

Try https://mrdata.usgs.gov/geology/state/state.php?state=NC and click "view in web browser". Zoom in and click on the geologic units, and data will pop up.

The layers function on that USGS map didn't want to work for me, specifically the "open road map" function. So the only reference points were the county border outlines.

Appreciate the help, Tim. The maps probably won't be much help. They don't get precise enough to locate small plots of land. They are better for an overall look at the area. I just mentioned it because I think a lot of newbies need to learn how to use the USGS services.
That piece of schist probably hasn't traveled too far. The source could be very close by.

Yes it takes some searching to find detailed geological maps and it's a crap shoot whether any exist for an area of interest.
